Forgetting is a blessing

Source : Google photo

Synopsis : We all have good as well as bad memories of people we met but our brain thankfully deletes the memories of bad people and their names because they never became our friends. This ability of our brain protects us from hurt feelings so it is a blessing.

When I was a college student, we had to memorize a lot of things in practically all subjects. How much we retained in our brain depended upon how much we could memorize and how well we memorized. The test came in the examination hall when we were given the question sheet and a blank answer book so we read with some trepidation what the questions were because there were always some surprises.

Now we had to seriously read the questions and decide which one to answer first so that we could utilize the most efficient way the time to answer the questions in three hours’ time we were provided. If we knew the answer to the question then it went quite smoothly and became easier for us to write the answers.

The trouble started when we came to the questions that were tough to answer so we usually attended to them the last but with less worry because by this time we were sure to pass the exam since we had answered 4 out of 6 questions well to our satisfaction. But the last two questions became a source of concern because our brain did not come up with the answers quickly the way the first four were tackled.

So I came up with the strategy for tough questions and devised a method to memorize the answers that I could instantly recall at the time of the exam.

In our entomology class we were taught how many types of antennae the insects have and what the names were. All the types started with an alphabet so I made a word out of it that meant nothing but was easy to remember like AKRABOTERE.

It so happened that this question was asked in our final exam so I wrote down the word I had memorized and answered in detail all the types after making a sketch with colored pencil of the antenna, the name and what insects have this type of antenna. The result was that I scored high on this exam so it was mentioned in the certificate of graduation as a special mention.

I tried this method in other subjects as well because it served me well during my studentship in college.

It is the memory that is needed to study any subject and do it well because if we cannot remember then we cannot learn that subject well enough to pass. It is the nightmare of every student if his brain goes blank during the exam time so he desperately seeks the answers that he needs to pass.

In our real life we are no longer required to remember our subjects because we have passed all exams and now have a job somewhere but to get there we often face a job interview when some awkward questions may be thrown at us to which we may not be able to answer satisfactorily. The real life is different from the college life that required us to study hard and remember our subjects.

Our brain works in mysterious ways that we humans often fail to understand. The efficacy of brain power varies from person to person that determines the IQ of that person. Some people remember everything effortlessly because they have photographic memory but they are rare people. Such people succeed in overcoming whatever challenge they face in life and become great scientists, engineers or mathematicians.

But for the rest of the humanity, we are stuck with the average brain capacity that often depends upon the environment where we grew up. Illiterate and vulgar parents do not teach their kids anything except what they know which amounts to nothing while the educated parents can teach their kids a great deal of what the kid needs to be successful in life.

The college teachers can only hone the brain a child has to learn various subjects but it does not work equally for all students. That is why in every class, there are those students who stand out while others sit in the back benches. A good teacher helps those who lag behind so that they too can graduate someday.

While I understood the power of the brain in retention of anything we learn as we grow up passing through many stages in our life, I also started to realize that forgetting something can also be a blessing which now brings us to the subject of this blog.

Our brain has the ability to retain the memories in some shape and form. It can be vivid or just a blur depending on the importance of what we try to retain. I think it is a part of our nature that we try hard to remember pleasant and important things but do not try at all to remember unpleasant people. I remember for example my high school roll number 97463 even after 60 years because it was my first board exam success at a tender age that opened up the whole world of education and excitement for me. I remembered because it was important to me.

Those who do not know what a Board exam is should know that a Board exam is organized by the state that thousands of students take on a given date and a subject no matter where they live in the state or province. The examiner remains anonymous and the student is just given a roll number so that the examiner knows nothing about the student. Once all the exams are done, the Board office then tallies the result for each student and publishes in the local news paper later.

But I have a difficult time to remember names of some people who were not my friends and were unpleasant to boot. I vaguely remember their faces but nothing more so they have all faded from my memory which I consider a blessing. A memory that brings back bad feelings about a person because they behaved the way they did is better off when dumped into the wastebasket of life. It is simply not worth remembering such people so our brain deletes the memory.

This ability of our brain to delete certain bad memories gives space in our brain for things to remember that has a positive impact on us. The impact of positive thinking cannot be over emphasized because it helps us become a better person.

We meet all kinds of people in our life in our school, college and later in our office, in our community where we live, in our society in general and even on the streets and other public places. We meet discourteous, ill mannered, arrogant and selfish people everywhere. We meet them in government offices, in our work places, in the markets, in the rural and urban areas etc.

Such people always leave a bad impression that you try to erase so our brain comes to our aid and deletes such people in order to increase our mental wellbeing and keep us sane. If your brain is filled with bad memories of bad people, it may cause severe depression that can physically make you unable to cope with it. Severely abused people often take their own life to escape such mental torture.

Others become extremely paranoid, mistrustful of others and vengeful because they fail to get solace or justice for what was done to them. They become mean, arrogant and selfish toward others whom they try to use for their own selfish reasons.

It is quite amazing what a child remembers since the time he becomes aware of people around him. He at first does not know how to speak but tries to imitate what he hears and tries to remember. People do not believe when I say that I remember my first birthday and the period before that when lying on my back I used to pull up my toes to suck. It is not unusual. There are many such people who will tell you about their earliest memories.

Babies in the womb of their mothers are known to listen to music if the mother plays piano or sings to the baby. Later after his birth he may avidly listen to music and develop an interest in it to the extent that he may become a singer or a pianist himself later in his life. His likes and dislikes have to do with what he retains in his memory.

If a child had a bad experience with a spider or an animal, he may develop a fear of it because his memory tells him to avoid it. If he got an electric shock or burned his finger, he will remember it and avoid it in the future.

This ability of the human brain to remember bad things serves a purpose. It protects the kid in the future by reminding him not to mess with spiders or bad animals. His bad experience with some people makes him avoid them in the future so he learns to keep his distance from them but also deletes the memory of them later.

We are naturally attracted to people who are gentle, kind, trustworthy, helpful and friendly with empathy for others, generous, highly educated, with high moral values and with integrity. It is hard to find all these qualities in just one person but we are attracted to them if we find them. We try to emulate them because they become our moral compass and give us direction in life. He may be your parent or a teacher or a friend.

The brain retains good memories of them and deletes bad memories of people who were not our friends. I have lived and worked in many countries but I cannot recall the names of my coworkers in the projects because they did not become my friends. I did not keep in touch with them and soon forgot their names and faces but I still remember a taxi driver in Sheung Shui  in Hong Kong who was so nice to me so long ago.

I do not remember who my classmates in college in California were but I remember the college president who became my mentor and helped me. I do not remember the names of my housemates who did not become my friends even after one year together living in the same house but I remember a gentle German who gave me a ride in Sicily so long ago and stayed with me in the campsite in Catania with a bottle of wine and talked to me for hours. I kept in touch with him for a long time.

So forgetting some people is a blessing and remembering good people is also a blessing. If you only care to write it all down in your memoir or in your blogs, people will be amazed to read your stories. I know that you are reading my blogs in more than 140 countries because you like to read my stories and about my experiences in many countries under difficult circumstances.

This way I give tribute to those good people in so many countries who helped me when I needed them and who extended their hands to me in their genuine friendship that I grasped eagerly. I cherish such good memories of them even today after so many years.

If you read my biography in the links given below, you will learn a lot about how I spent my years in so many countries and what challenges I had to overcome in order to reach my present age.

My brain has discarded the memories of bad people like old clothes that have no value but has retained the memories of the good people so that is a blessing. You too should cherish the friendship and good memories of all the good people in your life who have been your mentors, your teachers or your friends who stood by you when you needed them most.

Write about their good deeds if you are an aspiring writer. Tell others about them and set up scholarships in their name if you have money and want to preserve their memory forever. They deserve nothing less.

Let all the bad memories disappear from your mind like dark but fleeting clouds to let in the sunshine in your life.

Let go

Source : Google photo

Synopsis : Buddha said that the root of suffering is attachment. It was true then as it is now and more so because we can’t seem to let go. The blog looks at the idea of letting it go at a certain age and how it can transform your life in a simple way.

There was a time in ancient India when the kings and queens renounced their crown and wealth to go into retirement from their official duties and seek their spiritual improvement in an ashram located deep in a forest.

Their a spiritual guide called a rishi or a holy man took them under his care and taught them the meaning of life and how to attain total detachment from all worldly affairs to devote the rest of their life entirely to God. They did this by accepting a primitive life in the forest where they learned to live for the first time in their privileged life how to scrounge for food in the forest and did all the chores they were required including cleaning, sweeping their surroundings, milking the cows and live a simple life. They learned of scriptures to get valuable lessons to practice what they learned.

Now you can imagine a king and his queen who were used to all their worldly comforts in their palaces and who did not have to do anything except rule were now to live in a forest alone and away from all their riches, servants and their worldly duties for the first time so it was for them a great step but they did it unhesitatingly by stepping down from their throne and abdicating it to their heir.

This renunciation of a king of the worldly affairs won him great respect among his subject and elevated him and his queen to a level only the saints and great spiritual leaders  attained by sacrifice, complete detachment to everything they owned and the acceptance that nothing in this world is worth holding on to that binds a person down with its chains that are hard to unshackle.

This concept of renunciation of everything one is used to and accept a life of austerity, poverty and sacrifice in order to devote all his time to spirituality in order to attain nirvana was deeply ingrained into the people who chose to be a monk or a sadhu and is still practiced by those who have chosen this life voluntarily. They successfully detach themselves from everything they valued before they became monks including all human relationships they had with their relatives, friends and others.

But it is a lot harder to do it than one can imagine especially if you are used to your comforts and all the human relationships so it takes a great leap of faith, very strong determination and willingness to change your life so drastically all of a sudden.

It is different for those who from their childhood decide to choose a life of austerity and monkhood and devote the rest of their life to become closer to God through their spirituality. It requires of them years of studies of scriptures, rigorous training under the keen eyes of a great spiritual leader until they are deemed fit to wear the saffron robes and accept all that it implies.

But it is a lot harder to quit as a king or a person of great wealth and importance to renounce life and accept a life of poverty and sacrifice by living alone in a forest under the most primitive conditions, sleeping on a grass mat and looking for wild fruits and berries to survive.

We now live in the world where the materialistic life is not only hoped for but we devote our entire life to attain it. Those who become rich find it very difficult to give up all they have acquired over the years so they become a prisoner of their wealth. They simply cannot let go because the concept of letting it go at a certain stage of their life is alien to them so they find it very difficult to accept. By letting it go I do not mean that you have to renounce everything and become a monk or a sadhu although many have done so.

But if you are a person used to your creature comfort that you have acquired through hard work, education and tenacity, you are just like the most people who are scared of the unknown in life and lack courage to leave their comfort zones and travel to see the world and get to know how other people especially the poor people live.

You cannot just go to any country without knowing where to stay, what kind of food is available there or how to get around so you look for someone who lives there and can help you reduce your anxieties. It is unthinkable for such a person to go alone somewhere and seek adventure but there are those who love it and enjoy greatly.

In the Hindu religion, the renunciation is greatly emphasized to attain a desirable level of spirituality but not everyone is capable of it. You will see very rich people living in their mansions within high walls and guarded by sentries and ferocious dogs because they are afraid of losing it someday if they have acquired their wealth illegally. We hear of cases daily when the income tax people suddenly raid their premises and confiscate everything that is illegally acquired and demolish their mansions if built without proper approval of the authorities.

There are those who flaunt their wealth in the most vulgar manner by showing off their garages full of hundreds of cars that they never can use. Others flaunt their wealth by showing off their jewelries, their mansions and their extensive empire of valuable properties but are secretly worried about losing it all to tax authorities or to litigation caused by those who want it. They worry about the high taxes, high maintenance cost of properties and the bank loans they have to pay back.

Rich people in general have more to worry about than a poor or ordinary person who has very little to lose and just gets by somehow living modestly.

The rich worry about their safety and the safety of their children because big time criminals are attracted to them like flies who try to take away from them all they have acquired so they have round the clock security, high walls and ferocious dogs.

But this world is full of more poor people than the rich although they too aspire to become rich someday and start acquiring the same shackles that tie up the rich. In fact the poor people who have come into the middle class find it very hard to give up what they have accumulated through hard work, diligence and savings so they will laugh at you if you talk to them about giving it all up to live a simpler life without any encumbrances. It goes against all they believe in so they try to hold on to whatever they have because they believe in more the better aspect of the capitalistic life.

But a time comes in everyone’s life when people should ask what is the meaning of all we have acquired and why it is so important to keep them. Can we bring with us all that we have to where we are going eventually?

The ancient Egyptians thought so and had their tombs filled with gold, silver and precious furniture after their death but only to be looted by vandals and thieves later.

Similarly the properties left behind by the rich after their death ends up in courts and under long and bitter litigation by those who are left behind. The huge property of Michael Jackson is a case for study here.

So the idea of renouncing everything makes sense to some people who one day decide  to give it all away to poor people, to orphanages or to the charitable organizations who do good work and need the charity to continuing their good work.

We hear of Bill Gates or Warren Buffets who have donated billions of their wealth to charity and continue to do so. There are many such examples.

There was a king called Harshavardhana who lived thousands of years ago in India who went to Prayagraj where a great religious fair was held every 12th year and still does today. There he donated all the wealth of his empire to the poor pilgrims. When his treasury was empty, poor people still flocked to him for help so he started to give away his gold ornaments on his person but still more people came so he gave away his clothes to them until he stood naked and declared that he had nothing more to give. His queen then covered him with her shawl but the King went back to Prayagraj during the next fair with more treasures than what he previously had given away.  He was a king who had a great charitable heart who sincerely believed in letting it all go to help the poor.

But we too can let go when we are old. You do not need your big house and swimming pool, you do not need your farm house or the penthouse you bought. You do not need your fancy cars anymore because your eyes are weak so you don’t drive any longer. You do not need your closet full of fancy clothes and all the gadgets that fill your shelves. You do not need your great collection jewelry unless you are extremely greedy and want to flaunt your wealth in a most vulgar way that attracts the con men and thieves.

So the idea of downsizing everything in your life at a certain age starts to make more sense than before so you sell your big mansion and move into a small house that is just right for you. If the kids have gone away as they usually do then you do not need a big house anymore. If you still need to get around then a small electric tricycle will get you around wonderfully.

In your old age, what you need most is money that you have tied up in unproductive properties that have become a liability due to its high maintenance costs and taxes. Some people give it all up by monetizing all their assets and move into old age homes where they get to meet other retirees with similar penchant for downgrading.

Now I am not suggesting that you become a pauper to live a life of poverty in your old age and renounce everything to become a monk or a sadhu to go and live in a forest like the kings and queens used to do long ago.

I am suggesting that downsizing makes more sense when you are old and do not need all the things you have that can help you live a comfortable life after getting rid of them. In our old age that spares no one, the money becomes your best friend. It allows you to live the rest of your life with dignity somewhere and still maintain your independence.

Culture of impunity

Source: Google photo of women speaking out

Synopsis : There is a culture of impunity that exists everywhere for those who abuse others and get away with it. The blog looks at the root cause and the ways an abused person may learn to defend himself or herself.

I have written about the depredation of women who are subjected to sexual abuse in the entertainment industry where the casting couches become a standard for such abuses. It is now known that such abuses occur worldwide and are not limited to Holly Wood or Bolly Wood.

Read my blog called the sexual depredation of women here.

Women now have started to speak out through the Me too movement that has shown a light on the dark side of the industries where such abuses take place and some if not all abusers have been exposed and some have been sent to jails. Still a culture of impunity exists where women are too afraid to come out and openly expose the wrongdoers because rich people hire expensive lawyers to threaten the victims with the consequences or offer them hush money to keep quiet.

They also have a sinister tool in their tool kit to prevent the victims from speaking out. It is called No disclosure agreement or in short NDA that women and men must sign before they are employed that effectively seals their lips until they resign or leave the industry.

It is like a would be rapist entices a young woman with a promise of a great career in the movie or fashion industry and makes her sign the NDA so the young and beautiful young woman who is eager to get a break signs the NDA not knowing that she may be subjected to physical, moral, psychological and mental abuse later and may be prevented to speak out because she has signed the NDA. It then creates the culture of impunity for the abuser who takes advantage of his position to lure young people and sexually abuse them.

Once I was in Paris where a young model in skimpy clothes was posing for the photographer near the Eifel tower so I stopped to see the guy who could not take enough photos of the model so the poor girl kept on posing and changing angle every few seconds to satisfy the photographer. She was probably posing for a Vanity magazine or lingerie company although many companies use near nude models to sell their products because sex sells.

They hold fashion shows to show off their new creations of bras and panties or clothes where the models parade on the catwalk in very skimpy clothes while the photographers on both sides snap photos furiously. These models are chosen for their skinny bodies and boldness to appear in public showing a good part of their private parts. Some openly wear transparent clothes to drive home the point that they are not ashamed because the industry that pays them well demands such display to showcase what they are selling. These women are told to strictly maintain their body weight so they practically starve to do so.

They are told to have sex to stay fit so they become promiscuous in order to gain favors if they were not promiscuous before. They are frequently invited to parties by their producers where drugs, booze and sex are the theme so they turn the party into an orgy where anything goes. Young women knowingly attend such parties because they know what is expected of them. If a woman has been sexually active then what does it matter to her if a few more men jump in?

Now an Australian woman and a former model for a famous lingerie company talks freely about the depredations she suffered that shed light on the dark side of the company so watch the video here.

https://youtu.be/yeuDcNfogME

To the first timers it comes as a shock but she is told that she must be a team player in order to get a role or a job as a fashion model so she loses her shyness and inhibitions especially if she is given a lot to drink that may have cocaine in it. There is always a mama san who keeps an eye on the new recruits to make sure that the party is lively. She herself is a product of such culture of drugs, sex and abuse. Her role as a mama san is the same as in a whorehouse.

Once I asked a friend why there were so many Moslem women in the Bollywood film industry in its early days, he answered that in the early days of the industry there were only Moslem whores who could sing and dance so they were given roles in the movies. It did not hurt if they were pretty. The Hindu women did not sing or dance in public because their strict culture prevented it. It changed with time so now you see many women who have become stars in Bollywood and have become famous.

But their fame and wealth came at a price they were forced to pay just like in Holly Wood . Some have come out and have exposed this dark side of the industry where the sex and drugs culture is exposed that continues to abuse the new comers.

So the root cause of this exploitation of women and men is the objectification of the new aspirants who are told in no uncertain terms what is expected of them to succeed so they comply. If they come from poverty then they accept the price they must pay in order to become a star. Once they become successful meaning well known and wealthy, they try to forget how they were exploited by the people who made them the star. I suppose it was a lot more easier for the Moslem whores who joined the movie industry in its early days. Later they were pushed out by the new comers who were more aggressive and were willing to go any length to succeed.

So I come to the question – Why some people abuse women with such impunity in the movie, cosmetic, lingerie and many other industries where they try to sell their products using pretty women in skimpy clothes? You will see them in the auto industries and wonder what has a near naked woman to do with the sale of a new car model?

I think the bestial part of this sort of behavior is rooted in the Western culture that other culture of the East try to imitate now because they too  have started to believe that sex sells. If someone puts a picture of a naked woman in a U tube video, it gets more clicks even if the woman has nothing to do with the subject of the video. I suppose it is the male human nature that is attracted to female nudity in some form.

There was a time in the Western culture when women wore clothes hiding their entire body but they started to shed them gradually until some of them  were left with g strings on a public beach while others went a step further. Thus shedding their clothes in public came linked with shedding their inhibitions as well that led to the culture of promiscuity in some women. Such women became the trail blazers for the younger generation that picked it up with avidity.

Notice that I always say some women because not all women subscribe to this aspect in their culture even today because they like to stick to their conservative views on how women should dress. Just ask any Amish woman why they dress the way they do and they will answer that it is dignified, decent and moral. They are not the only ones who say and practice what they believe. You will not see Moslem women anywhere going bare breasted and wearing g-strings publicly. The whores do not have such inhibition but this blog is not about them.

The lingerie industry in particular is responsible for introducing the trend of skimpy clothes and diaphanous clothes that they display in prominent stores and Malls everywhere where models with stunning body and boobs wearing the lingerie are shown in huge colored posters. The old fashioned lingerie is not kept on shelves anymore because the buyers are told that the skimpy is the trend. The young women are nothing if not trendy.

When a culture introduces free mixing of sexes, the boys and girls playing together, going to school together from their childhood and later on to college, they shed all inhibitions. Those who are shy to go on dating and mixing with them are called prudes and are made fun of. If they remain virgin and are religious to boot, that too invites ridicule from those who are not like them so the pressure to conform what others are doing is doubled on them. This pressure is relentless if they manage to finish high school and go to college somewhere so some of them capitulate. Because no one wants to be lonely and without a date once in a while.

Personally I have nothing against free mixing of sexes from childhood because I have seen the negative impact on the psychology of young people where they can’t mix freely with each other. But how a boy or girl decides to live by the moral code of their society and that of their parents is best left to them and not to others in their school or college who may pressure them to conform.

Later when some men attain a level of importance in the entertainment industry meaning movies or TV or in the fashion industry, they take this free mixing with women to the next level where they start to abuse their authority over them so the casting couches come into play. Many pretty women have given in to their demands because not getting a role in the movies could make them earn a living on the streets.

So the NDA and the weakness of women in such circumstances have created the level of impunity for their abusers everywhere. Now some brave women have come out and spoken publicly about the abuse they suffered in the hands of some men and women ( remember the mamasans ?) that helps take away some of the impunity the abusers enjoy. Some have been sent to jails and others have settled with massive amount of money to the victims. In this age of instant messaging, social media and skype, one can spread the Me too movement a lot faster than the traditional media where abusive men still control them.

So I blame the culture that promotes knowingly or unknowingly the free mixing that ends up in sexual abuse of young women starting in High School and later takes it to the next level in college. Later the same people may become the abusers or the victims on a larger scale with drugs and alcohol thrown in for good measure although the drugs and alcohol may start even in high school in many cases.

In the college in California, I was often asked by my dorm mates to buy for them alcohol because they were underage. Marijuana was more easily available to them.

So it does not take a genius to figure out what happens when a bunch of horny boys and girls at a certain age get to go on dates. It is no wonder that in some traditional societies, the parents still insist on chaperons when their daughters go on dates. They keep an eye on the fellow when he is seriously courting a girl to keep them out of trouble until marriage.

This culture of impunity exists everywhere. It is easy to blame the woman if she is poor and has no fancy lawyers to defend her so the wealth of her abuser creates the impunity he enjoys. A man may be punished for tax fraud , drug trafficking or human trafficking or even a simple busted light in his car but seldom a man is punished just because a woman says she was abused by him. A judge may even blame the victim for her rape if she shows up in his courtroom in skimpy clothes.

I was amused by the tradition among the Amish people in Pennsylvania where the courting couple is allowed to sleep on the same bed but a long piece of wood must divide them. This piece of wood disappears once they are formally married so I admire the restraints the young Amish people practice when they are tempted.

I should end this blog here by saying that anyone who claims to be sexually abused by someone has the choice of defending herself with whatever means she has and walk away instead of submitting to the demands. To learn how to say a firm NO is a good thing that can keep you out of trouble.

Do you have the courage to say NO ?
