Egypt's lost queens

Synopsis : This blog brings to you in vivid colors the story of five most important queens in Egypt who helped shaped their history. They were beautiful, very intelligent and educated who had majestic personality and acumen to rule .They had the gift of diplomacy that helped them make Egypt richer and self sufficient in food. Through their rule, they brought Egypt to its height of glory that the world took notice of. They are called the lost queens of Egypt because of no faults of their own. Now they shine as never before as more is known about them through archaeology and new findings.

This blog looks at the five most important women in the 6000 year old history of Egypt who played a decisive role as queen , queen mother and as wife of the most famous Pharaoh of them all ,  Ramses II and examines in the video below their extraordinary power as a role model for all women in the world. They were beautiful, very educated in various sciences and astronomy, in military matters and knew how to rule their subject. They were responsible for the extraordinary growth of the military might but also made Egypt rich through trade and self sustained in food production.

During their reign, Egypt became famous for its riches and prosperity but they are considered lost queens who were relegated to obscurity whom history forgot or paid little attention to until recently when their full participation in the long and glorious history became known through arduous archaeological digs and discovery of important knowledge.
One of the most famous female pharaohs of Egypt was Queen Hatshepsut who ruled very successfully for about 20 years but her successor ruthlessly removed her name and accomplishment from the annals of history out of spite. Yet her most majestic temple in the valley of the kings in Luxor still stands as a testament to her greatness.

These five extraordinary women showed that women were as good as men or even better in ruling Egypt who left their mark in their grandiose temples and monuments that still inspire awe and impress the whole world. They were free, educated, adept in military matters, in numerous subjects pertaining to the rule of their subjects and left a legacy that shines even after thousands of years. They were adept in diplomacy and knew how to deal with other powerful empires of their time to get the maximum benefit from them for the benefit of all Egyptians.

Watch this video below made by Dr.Joann Fletcher on the lost queens of Egypt to know more about them and know their true place in the history that some kings had tried to obliterate but failed.

1. Hetepheres I

Hetepheres I may have been a wife of pharaoh Sneferu,[1] and the mother of King Khufu. It is possible that Hetepheres was only a minor wife of Sneferu and only rose in prominence after her son ascended the throne.[2] She was the grandmother of kings Djedefre and Khafra and Queen Hetepheres II.[1] Her titles include: King's Mother (mwt-niswt), Mother of the King of the Two Lands (mwt-niswt-biti), Attendant of Horus (kht-hrw), God's Daughter of his body (s3t-ntr-nt-kht.f).[2] Hetepheres I's marriage to Snefru solidified his rise to the throne. Two great lines were joined when they married, as she had carried the blood royal from one dynasty to the next. Her title as "Daughter to the God" began when her father, Huni, ruled, and continued when she married Snefru and gave birth to the next ruler, Khufu, who is the one who commissioned her tomb and pyramid.[3]  (Wikipedia)
Hetepheres I died during the reign of her son Khufu and is buried in the tomb near the pyramid of Khufu .

2. Hatshepsut

0_k32I1-5rDB98wde_ (1)

Source : Google photo of queen Hatshepsut

Hatshepsut was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. She was the second historically-confirmed female pharaoh, the first being Sobekneferu. Hatshepsut came to the throne of Egypt in 1478 BC. Wikipedia

One of ancient Egypt’s most prosperous rulers, profitable traders, and prolific builders was also the first (and arguably only) Pharaoh to rule Egypt as a King rather than a Queen. Hatshepsut reigned peacefully for over twenty years in the 15th century BC, ushering in a renaissance that marked the beginning of the New Kingdom period in ancient Egyptian history.

If you’ve never heard of her, there’s a reason for that. Twenty years after her nephew Thutmose III assumed the throne, most of Hatshepsut’s inscriptions and iconography were defaced or destroyed, her name and title removed, and monuments in her image vandalized: ostensibly part of a concentrated political effort by Thutmose to erase his predecessor in order to ensure the legitimacy of his son’s ascension to the throne. The full impact of this on Hatshepsut’s legacy was felt for over three thousand years, as she was effectively forgotten by history until 20th century archaeologists began uncovering the truth about her reign. Nefertari, also known as Nefertari Meritmut, was an Egyptian queen and the first of the Great Royal Wives of Ramesses the Great. Nefertari means 'beautiful companion' and Meritmut means 'Beloved of [the goddess] Mut'. She is one of the best known Egyptian queens, next to Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Hatshepsut. Wikipedia

4. Arsinoe IV
Arsinoe: 3D render

Source : Google photo of Arsinoe  IV , half sister of Cleopatra and murdered by her.

Arsinoe IV (ca. 68/67 – 41 BC) was the fourth daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes, sister of Ptolemy XIII and Cleopatra VII, and one of the last rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty of ancient Egypt. When their father died, he left Ptolemy and Cleopatra as joint rulers of Egypt, but Ptolemy soon dethroned Cleopatra and forced her to flee Alexandria.

When Julius Caesar arrived in Alexandria in 48 BC and sided with Cleopatra's faction, Arsinoe escaped from the capital with her mentor Ganymedes and joined the Egyptian army under Achillas, assuming the title of pharaoh. When Achillas and Ganymedes clashed, Arsinoe had Achillas executed and placed Ganymedes in command of the army. Ganymedes initially enjoyed some success against the Romans, negotiating an exchange of Arsinoe for Ptolemy, but the Romans soon received reinforcements and inflicted a decisive defeat on the Egyptians.

Arsinoe was transported to Rome, where she was forced to appear in Caesar's triumph. Despite usual traditions of prisoners in triumphs being strangled when the festivities were at an end, Caesar spared Arsinoe because of tremendous sympathy the Romans had for her and granted her sanctuary at Ephesus. Arsinoe lived in the temple of Artemis for many years, always keeping a watchful eye for her sister Cleopatra, who saw her as a threat to her power. Her fears proved well-founded; in 41 BC, at Cleopatra's instigation, Mark Antony ordered her executed on the steps of the temple. She was given an honorable funeral and a modest tomb in Ephesus.

The following video tells the story of Arsinoe in graphic detail and dazzling colors where modern day forensic scientists have found her skeleton in the octagonal tomb in Ephesus ( Turkey )and after thorough scientific studies declare the bones to be of Arsinoe who was murdered at the steps of the temple where she had lived , by the order of Mark Antony who at that time was the governor general of Ephesus but it was Cleopatra who wanted her sister assassinated.

5. Cleopatra VII

Cleopatra's story is well known where she is depicted as a ruthless ruler who killed her brother and half sister to ascend the throne and who beguiled Julius Caesar to make her the queen of all Egypt. But she was also a very learned woman who spoke fluently many languages and was known for her diplomatic skills that brought her country untold riches in trade and fame. A systematic effort is now being made to find her tomb that may be found in the near future as the videos below will show.

Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, nominally survived as pharaoh by her son Caesarion. As a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she was a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and companion of Alexander the Great. Wikipedia

The struggle with her teenage brother over the throne of Egypt was not going as well as Cleopatra VII had hoped. In 49 B.C., Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII—also her husband and, by the terms of their father's will, her co-ruler—had driven his sister from the palace at Alexandria after Cleopatra attempted to make herself the sole sovereign. The queen, then in her early twenties, fled to Syria and returned with a mercenary army, setting up camp just outside the capital.

Meanwhile, pursuing a military rival who had fled to Egypt, the Roman general Julius Caesar arrived at Alexandria in the summer of 48 B.C., and found himself drawn into the Egyptian family feud. For decades Egypt had been a subservient ally to Rome, and preserving the stability of the Nile Valley, with its great agricultural wealth, was in Rome's economic interest. Caesar took up residence at Alexandria's royal palace and summoned the warring siblings for a peace conference, which he planned to arbitrate. But Ptolemy XIII's forces barred the return of the king's sister to Alexandria.

Aware that Caesar's diplomatic intervention could help her regain the throne, Cleopatra hatched a scheme to sneak herself into the palace for an audience with Caesar. She persuaded her servant Apollodoros to wrap her in a carpet  which he then presented to the 52-year old Roman. She gained the favor of Caesar and became the queen of Egypt after her brother Ptolemy xiii was found drowned in the Nile. ( wikipedia).
After the defeat at Actium , her second lover Mark Antony committed suicide that led to the death of Cleopatra. It is not clear whether she was poisoned or she took her own life.

Latest discoveries in Luxor

IMG_5702

Source : Karnak temple in Luxor

During our recent visit to the Luxor Valley of the Kings where we saw some of the crypts of Kings and saw the temple of Hatshepshut , we never imagined that soon some wonderful discoveries near the temple will take place. We were told that a new discovery will be announced because the ground penetrating radar in one site had revealed man made chambers underground that needed to be excavated to know more.

But near the temple some one noticed a painted head half buried in sand that led to the latest discovery of 30 mummies in perfect state of preservation that were found at a depth of only a few feet. They are yet to be identified so the process goes on.

The experts believe that there may be more such mummies buried nearby at the same location within the perimeter of the famous temple of Queen Hatshepshut in Luxor.
I present to you five extraordinary videos here but the most important of the discoveries in Egypt no doubt is the finding of Tutankhamun's burial site by Howard Carter in 1922.
We had the opportunity to visit his crypt and his mummy but the treasures have been taken to the National Museum of Cairo.

5. Biggest and most important discoveries in Egypt

                                                                   Source : U tube

Egypt is an  exciting country where new discoveries of its ancient past  are common that shed light on its civilization believed to be at least 5000 years old. The old dynasty that built pyramids and elaborate burial crypts for their kings and queens found it difficult to protect them because they were looted by thieves no matter how difficult to reach . So later dynastic rulers started to bury their kings and queens in deep underground crypts in the valley of the kings and the queens in Luxor among other places where every trace of the access to the crypts was carefully erased to protect them from looting.

The best example of the unlooted crypt is that of King Tutankhamun in the valley that we saw where the mummy of the king is still in display but many such crypts have been found in the valley where important kings and queens have been buried in some of the most elaborate crypts deep underground.

The access tunnels and stairs that lead to the crypt are painted in hieroglyphs of dazzling colors that have remained vibrant and fresh as if painted recently but are thousands of years old. The colors were preserved because the entry points were carefully covered and hidden so no sunlight could penetrate them . It was not meant to be seen by any mortal so the royalties could sleep in peace for eternity but the discoveries have opened up the crypts for the tourists or anyone that may endanger the beautiful paintings on the walls.  Efforts are being made to protect them with glass walls and a ban of flash photography. The soft ambient lights are provided as well.

No one knows what awaits there because new and very exciting discoveries are being made by the archaeologists there just like the recent findings near the Hatshepshut temple in Luxor. With the modern tools and technology available today, we can expect to hear more of such discoveries in Egypt.

Parents have a duty

parental-duty-family

Source : Google photo

Synopsis: We all hope to live a better life than our parents if we come from poverty but that hope is nourished by parents who do their duty to raise the child properly. The poor say that their poverty is the trap they can't seem to get out of but there are many ways a poor person can succeed in life through hard work and honesty. The blog looks at the reasons for the poverty trap and ways anyone can get out of it.

There was a child who was born in a very poor family where his parents were preoccupied with the struggle for living so could not even buy kerosene for the lamp the child needed for his studies so he sat under a street lamp to read. He was a smart kid who only needed the means to get some education so the poverty did not prevent him. He understood at his tender age that his parents were too poor to provide him the means so he took it upon himself to find the means even if it meant studying under a street lamp.

Later the child would grow up to be a great philosopher and a social reformer of his time and attain the level of education to become the principal of a prestigious college in Kolkata. A great bridge is dedicated to his name  that is synonymous to great knowledge, wisdom and learning.

A vast number of poor people in this world produce large number of children for whom they feel scant responsibility other than a poor meal once or twice a day if they are lucky. It is quite possible that many such poor children growing up in slums and shanties are born smart but are not given the opportunity to reach their full potential because their poor parents are unable to do so.

If you go to any village in Burundi or Rwanda , you will be instantly surrounded by very large number of children , some very young and others a bit older who appear like magic. Their clothes that are in tatters and bare feet speak volumes about their conditions but their parents who are dirt poor farmers keep producing such children year after year relegating their future to poverty and dirt farming. Nobody knows what these children could be if they were given good food and sent to school. Nobody knows their potential because they are not given the opportunity to fulfill it.

This is the same story in the slums of large and small cities and towns in many so called third world countries where teen age pregnancy is common and where women learn to be promiscuous at a very early age but learn no sense of responsibility that comes with producing children who are born of lust and not love.

One analogy comes to my mind here so I am tempted to look at the act of procreation from the point of view of animals that are wild or domestic and see that the animals procreate because they are hard wired to do so to continue their existence. But the females are also hard wired to breed only with the most powerful and handsome males to the benefit of their progeny that are also strong and beautiful. The weak and sick animals are not given the chance of breeding so  they die out naturally or are pushed aside by the stronger animals. The nature has no mechanism to take care of weak and sick animals so they just die or are killed by other animals that are stronger.

That is the law of nature . The females are also hard wired to prepare their off springs for survival in the wilderness and teach them all the things they know to do so. The mother cheetah patiently teaches the young ones to learn to hunt and fight in self defense. The mother seal patiently teaches the young seal to learn to swim because she knows that it is a necessary skill for them to survive.

But we as humans do not learn from the animals how they prepare their progeny to survive on their own and think that our responsibility ends by giving them birth. The morality that leads to marriage is considered a middle class phenomenon that also emphasizes love, care, proper nutrition for the new born and preparing the young ones for their secure future by providing them all the opportunities like education and training to do so. They also restrict the size of the family because they want to take good care of a few children than having a large family of 7 or 8 kids . These are the responsible parents  who raise children with good moral and religious values .

The poor of this world are less constrained by such values and the sense of responsibility because they feel that their poverty does not permit it. They give in to lust easily because the morality or the lack of it does not weigh heavily on them so they start breeding when they come of age without giving much thoughts to the future. That is where they are different from the animals because the animals prepare their progeny for the time when they have to be on their own. Also having illegitimate children with several partners does not have the social stigma among the poor that the middle class people have.

The religion does play a role in reminding people of all class, rich or poor that they all have a social responsibility when they bring in any child to this world but the poor are less prone to listen to padres because they use their poverty as the excuse. Very few poor children have to will to study under a street lamp to get the education they need to succeed in their life so they remain mired in poverty generation after generation.

I have recently visited the Amish people of Pennsylvania in the United States where  they raise their children with love and care and send them to school up to the 8th grade because they feel that their farming life style does not need more education than the 8th grade. The Amish children thus raised fit in perfectly into their roles in their self sustained farming life where they live simply, frugally and in communities where they feel their responsibility toward all the members of their community and help them when in need. There no one goes hungry and lives in need so all the Amish help each other who are similarly raised. They also are devout Christians with high moral values. (Please read my blog on the Amish here called The admirable Amish )

But in the communities of the poor in the world, there are no such values and where every individual has to fend for himself to survive. There are no social securities for them so they may die of many preventable illness. The jobs that some may find is related to their lack of schooling or training so the most accept the low paying jobs others won't do . You ll see a very large number of the rural poor work in the farms for low wages that helps them survive but not out of poverty cycle just like in those hills of Burundi and Rwanda.

The slum dwellers in the cities also survive getting low paying jobs of washing clothes or gardening for the middle class or the rich people but it does not give them a way out of their cycle of poverty. They are also the heaviest breeders in any country where their government struggles to provide some aid to their poor.

The economy of a country develops when most people work, earn and pay their taxes so it is called the formal economy where the tax money is then spent for the development of the country. When there is  growing number of people who get out of poverty through education and getting marketable skills , they join the middle class that creates demands for goods and services that in turn acts as the motor that runs the economy.

This demand for goods and services creates employment opportunities for others . It is said that one person who has a steady job supports at least 10 people who provide him the services not including his own family so one million working people with stable jobs support nearly 10 million people.

Most of these 10 million people are called self supporting because they open up small shops or business that provide the service others need and in the process become a part of the middle class themselves. Many washer men and women open up their laundry service and a cook may open up a small eatery that serves wholesome food at low cost.
These are the enterprising people who try hard to succeed in life by becoming successful entrepreneurs . ( please read my blog here called  Result of hard work) but not all the poor are successful entrepreneurs because they do not have what it takes to succeed in getting out of poverty.

One maid who was working in Singapore sent home her hard earned money every month but her unemployed husband called common law husband meaning not married was spending the money carelessly by drinking and keeping another woman as well and producing more illegitimate children. This is the sad story of millions of women working hard abroad in low paying jobs while their partners spend the money without a care in the world and impregnating other women. Drinking, gambling and borrowing money for their bad habits that may include womanizing comes naturally to some poor people who think it is quite normal.

The fact is that there is nothing normal about being poor with bad habits. There are numerous examples of poor people who have made a good life for themselves through sheer determination and hard  work by getting the education and skills they needed to get good jobs. Even for the very poor, there are opportunities if they are wise to see and make use of it.

We had a maid here who was only 16 years of age and very smart so her barrio got some money together to pay for her high school education. I am sure she had gone on to get a college education later and has now a good job somewhere. There was another very poor girl whom the nuns of a convent supported for her college education because they knew that she was intelligent and willing to study hard to succeed. She has a doctorate degree now and lives in Europe on assignment. ( please read my blog here called Small towns and dreamers )

So my blog focuses on the parental duties today that excuses no one. We like the wild animals have a duty to our off springs to prepare them for the future when we will not be around. Many fail to do their duty so the kids suffer due to no fault of their own. Some poor people are known to leave their new born in a basket secretly at the door steps of rich people hoping that they will be adopted while others offer their children to the adoption agencies that then look for foster families some where.

In Brazil, some parents abandon their illegitimate children who then grow up in the streets of big cities just like feral animals scavenging the garbage bins for food. These street children try to survive on their own by getting into prostitution and other such activities and are often treated as vermin to be eliminated by armed thugs. It is a big social issue they do not like to talk about there.

In modern South Africa, the same things happen in places where black people live in vast slums and in poverty so in different countries, poor people find different ways to survive as poor but fail to get out of poverty.

Now I will suggest ways to get out of poverty.

You can get some kind of vocational training like carpenter, mason, auto mechanic, repairman for electronics, refrigerators, air conditioners etc. Such training are usually given by the governments in many countries and it does not require a formal education so anyone smart enough to learn a trade can apply. In the Philippines the  Don Bosco  school offers such training. It leads to good jobs.

You can sell something in the streets and save your money to start someday your own small shop and prosper later from it.  I know of some one who did it.

If you finish high school with good grades, some opportunities will come your way for higher education because some universities provide free tuition for poor students.

In the United States many kids work part time to pay for their own education. I know because I did it myself. There are many part time jobs available for anyone who is determined to finish college.

If you are an artist or craftsman of some quality, then some people will buy your artwork. Now with the worldwide Internet, you can post your art work for free and get free publicity so that people may know about your talent. A kid in England who started drawing with charcoal the faces of people has now become a sought out artist and very rich because his parents put his artwork in the Internet.

You can compete if you have the singing ability like Amira Willighagen in Holland who has become a star known all over the world at her tender age of only 12. She learned how to sing by watching U tube videos. There is a similar case here in the Philippines where a very poor child became a star through her singing ability.

If you have a high school diploma, are healthy and very determined , then you can join the armed services in your country where they can train you in a profession other than fighting like radio operator, drone pilot, technical expert for servicing aircraft and other machinery, as medic, as physical therapist, as logistics specialist, as commissary agent and many more . Later you can earn a good living using the skills learned in the armed services. They also offer financial aid for your college education.

Poor but athletic children can succeed as professional football or basketball players if they can get more training somewhere.

There are many ways one can get ahead in life but it requires a character building where your parents play a crucial role. If they are drunkards, womanizers and gamblers then they provide a poor role model for you who will be influenced by them. It is like a prostitute who tells her daughter to be chaste . It does not work that way because you need the moral ascendancy to do so.

But if your parents are honest, religious and hard working people who practice good values in-spite of being poor, they will teach you all you need to know to succeed in life. This character building starts very early in a child's life. He absorbs everything he sees , hears and feels and has to be taught what is good and what is not . Ill behaved children who are innocent  absorb all the bad things they see, feel and experience so here lies the great responsibility of the parents.
Teach your children good values and honesty even if you are poor . It is your duty.

Will robots replace us?

Robots

Source : Google photo of a humanoid robot

Synopsis: At the rate the robotic technology is evolving , soon it may become super intelligent  using artificial intelligence that allows it to learn itself and perform better in any job it is designed for but there is a danger. One day these super robots may be able to control us and decide what is good for us and what is not because they will be autonomous and not under any one's control. This blog discusses some of the issues.

We have all seen a sophisticated drone that flies over Afghanistan, locates a target, zooms its camera on it to enlarge the target , verifies it then releases a missile on it to completely destroy it. It is so accurate that it can kill an individual or a group of terrorists so many armies use drones for surveillance, target terrorists or military installations and can destroy them using a pilot-less machine controlled remotely from somewhere.

The modern technology makes it possible to fly a drone remotely using satellite guidance system and accurately hit a target anywhere. It is pilot-less so it is expendable and can be subject to ground fire . The big drones are expensive but less than a modern fighter aircraft with two pilots but they can do what the fighter planes can and a whole lot cheaper so it seems that the drones will be increasingly used in military conflicts . Many countries make their own drones that can stay aloft for long time because they are light and fuel efficient.
But drones are not robots because they need a human handler who flies the drone from the comfort of his airbase so for the handler, it is like playing a video game except for the fact that the drones are real and can cause heavy damage on the ground.

A robot is independent of a handler because it does not need a remote handler like a drone.  What it is supposed to do is programmed into it so you see them welding car parts together, spray painting them and expertly checking for flaws and repainting them. There are factories in Japan where very sophisticated automated machines make auto parts and  work 24 hours a day with only a few bored supervisors who keep an eye on them and move in just in case of an emergency. These automated machines are robots.

Robots are now being used to build ships, planes, automobiles , trucks and military hardware etc. in many countries and have replaced workers doing dangerous jobs .They are used in deep mines where they extract minerals , cut tunnels , load the extracted minerals onto trolleys that are then sent to the surface.

They are used in underwater explorations in deep oceans without risking the lives of deep sea divers so the robots are used in numerous ways now and newer ways are found every day to make use of them in jobs that are too risky for humans. We now see an explosion of new types of robots that can walk, talk, take your order in restaurants and bring your food to you silently. They can dance and even play some musical instruments or do numerous other chores like acting as a receptionist because they are programmed to do so by expert programmers.

The robots can do what the humans can do but do it better because they do not tire like humans and can work as long as needed so you will now see more and more robots taking over jobs in vehicle  assembly plants , in making clothes in automated looms and even assembling minute parts to makes watches. They make very sophisticated circuit boards used in cell phones or electronic devises like television sets flawlessly because they are programmed to do so being autonomous.

The worldwide use of robots is increasing because they are cost effective and can replace many workers thus saving considerable money for the companies. The robots do not go on strike for higher wages and do not need long training to do the job. Now some hospitals are using robotic surgery for certain type of operation that are very tiresome for humans. There are robotic trucks being tested on roads that are pre programmed to run on a fixed route taking their guidance from a satellite so it is no longer a science fiction but very real. You all have heard of self driving cars that are being tested.

In the future their roles may include driving you to your destination in comfort in robotic cars or fly you in robotic planes or helicopters, deliver packages to your door or pick up your package to be delivered somewhere else.

Source : U tube video of robots

So the robots are here to stay and are taking over the jobs people used to do so what will people do if most of the jobs are taken over by robots? I can understand if the robots take over the dangerous jobs and save lives so that people can find jobs that are not dangerous and even enjoyable but what if they make robots that can replace people doing mundane jobs or fun jobs in the future? How will millions of people earn their living if they are replaced by robots in the future? That is the question this blog raises.

The agriculture sector in any country employs large number of people who work very hard to plant crops and harvest them but now we see robotic machines taking over the tiresome job of plowing, planting and harvesting working long hours in any kind of weather so where these people will find new jobs to earn a living?

One thing the robots can't do is to think like humans .They are just machines that are programmed to do some jobs in a certain predetermined way and nothing more. But soon that may change when the next generation of robots are programmed to think like humans using artificial intelligence ( AI ). People say that there are scientists who are working on AI using computers that will be able to read your thoughts in the future that I find very disturbing.

Imagine if they make a robot that starts to think like a human someday and makes decisions faster than a human. Imagine a robot that is so intelligent that Einstein looks like a moron . Imagine a robot that stores the entire encyclopedia in all the languages in its brain and recalls any information instantly to arrive at a decision. Imagine a robot that learns from its mistakes or the mistakes of other robots and never repeats it. Imagine a robot that knows all the laws in all the countries and instantly recalls them to defend or prosecute someone very successfully in any court of law? May be it will put all the crooked lawyers and judges out of work and reduce corruption.

Imagine a robot that can just look at you and read your brain waves that your brain emits when you are thinking and is capable to translate it into a language that it understands instantly. It is scary but we are fast approaching the day when such a robot will appear somewhere because many scientists and computer experts are working hard to develop such a robot. They say that the AI or artificial intelligence is the future.

Source : U Tube video on dangers of Artificial intelligence in robots

There was a Hollywood movie I saw sometime ago and promptly forgot its title but it showed that an autonomous war plane takes off vertically from a carrier and decides to go on its own to attack a target in another country and disobeys all commands from the commanders on the ground so finally a brave pilot shoots the rogue war plane down from a distance with its missiles. It looks like the science fiction now but Jules Verne also wrote about Captain Nemo and the Nautilus long before such machines were  made so today's science fiction has a way of turning up for real in the future.

There are people hard at work in many countries who are trying to make science fiction a reality so we are seeing the development of robots that are smart, very intelligent and can do many things better and faster than human without tiring. But what bothers me is the development of autonomous machines with AI and their use for military purposes or for spying or getting a confession from a detainee by reading its secrets in the brain.

Such a robot will be able to make any person's brain transparent by reading what the person is thinking and use that knowledge to the advantage of a government that plans to use the knowledge to wage war on another country. It can create all sorts of trouble in the world and increase the chances of war waged by a dictator on another country that does not have such robots.

Many nations keep some secrets that they guard jealously because revealing them can cause harm to the country or to others. This is how the spy agencies collect information on others and use such information to their advantage. The use of robots by the military is nothing new. But totally autonomous robots can be scary because no one may be able to control them like that rogue fighter plane shown in the movie. It can start a nuclear war between two countries because it can decide by itself the level of threat and make a preemptive strike on its own. That is very scary when humans lose control over such machines that can do immense harm.

There are now missiles tipped with nuclear bombs that once launched can reach their target no matter where in a very short time evading all radars and other defensive measures because it can see day and night and is equipped with AI that permits it to maneuver itself while in flight. This kind of robotic weapon is already a reality in some countries.

I am more concerned with job losses when the robots replace humans. In developing countries where agriculture is their mainstay employing millions of people who depend on it for making a living , the automation of agriculture is still a long way off for them so they do not have to worry for now. But even there we see a trend in the land consolidation to make automation or the use of machines for large scale farming by big corporations is on the rise pushing poor people off their land so they end up in cities.

I am also concerned  about the factory workers who may lose their jobs due to automation there  as is happening in many countries. Such trend has a tremendous impact on the rate of unemployment in any country that can go up causing social unrest.

The scientists develop new technologies that can often harm the mankind like the development of the atom bomb that was later used on Japan to kill innocent people . They created a monster that is now out of its bottle that cannot be put back in causing world wide tension and a rising threat of nuclear war somewhere so not all technologies are benevolent in their nature.

If they can create intelligent robots that can diagnose any disease in a person and find a quick and cheap solution , that will help millions of poor people who can't afford costly healthcare in costly hospitals. The rising cost of health care is a serious issue that most countries are facing with but are unable to cope.

It can save poor people from the greedy doctors who want to operate on a pregnant  woman for delivery instead of natural birth because they make more money. So the intelligent robots can significantly reduce the health care cost.

How many times we have heard of a plane crash due to pilot fatigue ? It has happened many times but an intelligent plane that can safely land itself is not a science fiction but a reality although a pilot still keeps an eye on it all the time in flight. So that is the key. We must not lose control over machines no matter how intelligent it is so that we can always control it and remain its master.

You can have a car that drives itself but you still need to sit in the driver's seat and keep an eye on it just in case it does not work the way it should. The technology today is fast evolving  but we must not let it overwhelm us in a way that makes us lose control.

I will just give you one example how harmful a technology can be in the hands of common people that is being used to create mischief. Now a days almost everybody has a cell phone in his hand . Bad people use their cell phones that are now called smart phones to spread false news rapidly to thousands of people that can cause riots and communal tension in a country like India. No one can control them so they misuse or abuse the technology that was created to make communication easier.

I am not against technology. I am against the abuse of technology that brings harm to people. If the robots create unemployment everywhere then I am against it. If robots start replacing the human touch, love and care then it is not a good thing.
Now watch this video here that explains why artificial intelligence can be so dangerous.

We now live in the era of scientific breakthroughs in numerous fields that are changing the way we live, communicate, work and travel. It is very different from the previous generation that depended on technologies of their time but the times have changed to impact us positively as well as negatively.

We must not forget that we should control the new technologies and not let it control us in the future. The collective power of  technology controlled by the artificial intelligence can be disastrous for the humanity . Such genies can't ever be put back in the bottle.
