A hero like no other Netaji Bose

A hero like no other Netaji Bose

Source : Google photo of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose

There is no person as important as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the history of Indian struggle for its independence from the British. Although the whole world remained ignorant of the sacrifice he made to free India from bondage due to the suppression of his life from the history books by the people who ruled India since 1947, he stood tall as the national hero who fought the British tooth and nail to make them leave in 1947. The blog highlights Netaji Bose's role in the armed struggle for the Independence but also unveils the real story of a hero who returned to India to serve the country and to prove that he did not die in a plane crash in Taipei in 1945.

Today I want to write about the word Netaji, what it means and why it is important in the context of the changes taking place in India today.
To understand who was Netaji and why the country venerates him and his contribution to free the nation from the bondage the British imposed on it to rule it for over two hundred years. Today I will try to explain why Subhash Chandra Bose was called Netaji and why there has been to other person who could take his place in the history of the struggle for India’s freedom.

Why Netaji Bose was sidelined by the people who sought power to rule the independent India and why he was not given the honor and recognition he richly deserved by those who were afraid of him who brought independence to India through his armed struggle.

They were afraid that their fake narrative of Gandhi and Nehru would be exposed and their public support would vanish if the truth about Netaji came out so they erased his story from the pages of history. His photo was not placed in the Parliament , his books were banned, his statues were not placed in prominent places anywhere, his sacrifice to make India free was not recognized by the ruling party headed by an autocrat who was chosen by the departing British to serve their interest even after independence.

So Netaji remained an enigma to most people because his memory was suppressed by the people in power for 70 years but Netaji remained in the hearts of millions of countrymen and women. The lies about Netaji was repeated so many times that the younger generation born after independence became apathetic and some believed the lies until the wheel of time turned.

Instead of going back in the history pages where one could find little about Netaji, one has to find other sources of information about him that are plentiful . There are many people who have dedicated their life long efforts to unveil the forced secrecy on the life of a national hero who was ignored and sidelined by those who claimed all the credit of the freedom movement.

I will not write about who was Netaji and what he did to gain the national prominence as the leader ( Netaji ) because there are hundreds of books written about him, many movies made about him and thousands of documents in the public domain that anyone can read to know more about him.

But I do want to write about what I knew from my personal experience in Vietnam where I used to work as a volunteer agronomist from 1967 to 1969.

Role of Netaji Bose in the Vietnam war :

Source: Google photo of Netaji Bose arriving in Saigon perhaps in 1945 near the end of the world war II

I went to Vietnam at a time when there was a war going on between the Vietnamese and the Americans so I experienced the horror of war many times personally and came nearly to grief more than once. To read more about my experience there please read my chapter three on Vietnam called The war torn Vietnam , 1967 to 1969 .

Role of Netaji in the Vietnam war :

Most Americans and those who supported the war favoring USA do not know until now who indeed was Netaji and what role he had played in the war because the Netaji Bose was unknown to them.
But one person who knew him well and followed his advice was no other than Ho Chi Minh himself who asked his help to make his country free. Americans never knew who was Netaji but General Giap knew. Netaji was the military and political advisor of Ho Chi Minh and General Giap.

Netaji Bose was in contact with the Vietnamese leadership in Hanoi long before the arrival of American troops in south Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh valued Netaji and took his advice on training and tactics seriously in order to create a superb fighting force to face the enemy like France and later the USA.

One night I was in Saigon where I was attending a seminar on rice research and stayed at a dormitory where other attendees were staying. When I went out at midnight to take a walk and to get some fresh air, I lost my way back to the dorm and approached an American MP who was guarding a military post. I asked him where this place was but received no answer. I then realized  that he was on drugs and was completely stoned out. He had a gun in his hand that anyone could have taken it from his hand or shoot him so I was really shocked.

I wandered around some more until I found the street eventually but I came to know that all kinds of drugs were freely available to the American and Vietnamese soldiers during the war thanks to the Vietnamese generals who were bringing in drugs from the Golden triangle using their personal aircrafts. A great quantity of this drug ended up in the United States when the dead bodies of soldiers shipped to the States were used to conceal the drugs in their abdomen thus giving rise to the name Orient Express. Everybody involved in the drug trade became rich at the expense of the soldiers who died there.

Netaji was a military genius who taught the Vietnamese how to fight a guerilla war and shared his own experience in Burma where his army ( Indian National Army) had fought against the British and won many battles. He taught the classic way to fight an enemy rich with great resources while the poor Vietnamse could afford really very little except their strong will . The Vietnamese had gained some experience in fighting the French whom they defeated in the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 but the Americans were formidable and had more modern weapons so they welcomed Netaji and eagerly adopted his fighting techniques to fight the Americans more successfully.

But no American ever knew that it was Netaji who had advised Ho Chi Minh that drugs could demoralize enough the Americans to fight the war so one day they would leave. The 60000  dead and more injured soldiers had already led to massive anti war protests in the USA and around the world.  The rest is history.

He was also present during the signing of the peace treaty between Vietnam and the United States in Paris in 1972 but remained in the background.

He helped the Dalai Lama and his other monks escape from Tibet and safely brought them to India when Tibet came under the occupation of China through difficult mountain passes. Dalai Lama and his monks have lived in the northern mountain shelters known as Dharmashala ever since.

Source : Google photo where Netaji Bose is seen with the Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri in Tashkent meeting.

We see Netaji again in Tashkent when the Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri  and his counterparts from Pakistan met there to sign the Peace treaty in 1965. In a group photo taken of Shastri, Kosygin and others in Tashkent , Netaji was clearly shown. That photo was analyzed by the experts to declare that he was Netaji .

Lal Bahadur Shastri was murdered by someone using poison but Mr. Shastri had called his wife before his death and told her that he had met someone very important and was going to give the country the good news when he arrived. It is not known whether he was going to bring this extraordinary person with him in his aircraft. The murder of Lal Bahadur Shashtri is another story. The movie called The Tashkent files might be worth your interest in this subject.

From these incidents, we see that Netaji was politically active since the end of the 2nd World War in 1945 so the narrative that he had died in a plane crash in Taipei was not true. The Indian government always pushed the narrative although there was no evidence that Netaji died in a plane crash. Infact later enquiries on this subject found no record of a plane crash in Taipei on the day Netaji was supposed to have died.

Later it was found that Netaji was not even in Taipei that day when his plane was supposed to land in there on its way to Tokyo. His plane was rerouted to Manchuria by his Japanese pilot so the narrative of Taipei plane crash was just a diversionary tactic probably used by Netaji himself to get off the radar of the Americans and the British who were looking for him.

Source : Google photo of Netaji Bose in Russia

From Manchuria Netaji goes to Moscow where Stalin gave him sanctuary and protection because Stalin hated Nehru who wanted to hand over Netaji to the British as a war criminal if he ever returned to India.

Stalin also recognized the independent India when Netaji won the Andaman Islands where he raised the National flag for the first time . There were 12 other countries that recognized new India 1943 that allowed India to open embassies there.

There are many people in Moscow who had met Netaji there so the Indian government knew that Netaji was alive and well in Russia but continued to push the narrative that he had died in the Taipei plane crash.

It also continued to use the secret police to keep an eye on the Bose family in Kolkata for over 25 years and read all the letters between Bose and his family.  They did this to know the whereabouts of Netaji Bose.

Netaji Bose at the funeral of Nehru in 1964.

Nehru died in 1964 when I was still in college. One day someone showed me a black and white photograph taken during the funeral of Nehru where someone who looked like Netaji was seen in the photograph. This created quite a stir on campus that excited us to no end.

I have seen Nehru during his rallies for election  and went to listen to him a few times when he made bombastic speeches but I like many others did not see the villain that he was because of the government propaganda. He became the enemy of Netaji when he realized that he could not hold a candle to him.

I have once seen Nehru face to face when one day he arrived at our college in a white convertible car with two policemen on motorbike as escort. The car stopped in front of us near the admin building and we were surprised to see Nehru come down.

We were also surprised when he said Am I here to greet you or you are here to greet me? I then rushed to call the principal who was fixing his tie so the poor fellow came out in a hurry but Mr. Nehru was arrogant and in a bad mood because he was expecting a large number of people waiting for him and greet him with flower garlands.

Nehru was an autocrat as a prime minister and took many wrong decisions during his tenure that caused India a lot of harm. He gave the veto power to China when India was one of the founding fathers to establish the UN .This mistake has and continues to cause many problems for India that the country suffers from.

I never felt any emotion when Nehru died because I did not respect him as a human being but I felt great emotion when I heard that Lal Bahadur Shashtri died in Tashkent under mysterious circumstances. He came to our college and we sat around him asking questions and he smiled and answered them all. His humility and sweet nature won our heart in stark contrast to Nehru. I saw both of them from very near. It was no wonder that Netaji was in Tashkent with Shastri. Only a patriot like Netaji could appreciate another patriot who would give his life for his country.

The country loved Netaji and he would have been the Prime Minister of Free India and not Nehru. It was Nehru who had signed a secret pact with the British that Netaji will be handed over to them to face trial as a war criminal if Netaji ever returned to India. The secret document came out after the death of Nehru that shocked the whole nation.

Netaji Bose returns home:

Source: Google photo of Gumnami Baba in Faizabad to the right and Netaji Bose earlier photo to the left.

Then one day in 1982, an unknown saint ( called Bhagwanji or Gumnami Baba ) appeared in a small town called Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh. He lived in isolation and only received very few visitors who were allowed to talk to him through a curtain. No one saw his face except the caretaker who cooked his meals and one or two people who had access to him. Many came to meet with him secretly during the night including Indira Gandhi and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Sampurna Nand.

It is not known when Netaji Bose returned to India but it was assumed that he arrived in Nepal from Russia and entered India from there. It is also not known where he lived and for how long before he chose Ayodhya to spend the last few years of his life. People say that he lived in Basti for a while .

He was an unknown saint, so why so many important people wanted to meet him ? Indira Gandhi  knew that Netaji was alive so perhaps she wanted to verify if indeed the unknown saint was Netaji.
Among his other visitors were his comrades in the Indian National Army who had acted as his adjutants, officers and one who was his chief of the intelligence bureau of INA.

Others were his doctors who attended to his health. Slowly the news started to appear in some newspapers that the unknown saint aka Gumnami Baba was the Netaji himself who for unknown reasons decided to remain unknown. Please read my blog  called The Unknown saint here  that I wrote sometime ago and a blog called

My heroes : Subhash Chandra Bose.

Then sometime in 1985 the unknown saint died of heart attack and was secretly cremated near the river in Faizabad but his dead body was covered with a sheet and face was also covered.

During his stay in Faizabad, people close to him asked him why while he remained behind curtain and why he did not come out to tell the whole nation that he had returned.

He said that he had his own reasons. When pressed for more answers, he said that it was not in the interest of the country that he should come out because it may cause great social disturbances among the people. His antagonists were many in power who may clash in the streets with those who love him therefore he preferred to remain in the background. It disappointed the whole nation because he was their hero who brought them independence. He was the father of the nation. He did not hide in Faizabad . It was his wish to live the rest of his life as an unknown saint.

Netaji Bose finally received the honor he so richly deserved

Source : Google photo of the grand statue of Netaji Bose inaugurated by the Prime Minister Modi near India gate in New Delhi.

But in 2014 the government changed and the BJP Prime Minister Modi was elected who not only gave the honor to Netaji that the previous governments of Nehru and Gandhis denied,  he got Netaji’s statue installed in Delhi at the most prominent place near the India gate. He also set up a museum in the Red Fort in Delhi where the entire history of Netaji and his freedom struggle movement is shown with photos and numerous documents. The old soldiers of the INA were recognized during the January 26 parade in Delhi although many had died.

Why Netaji chose to live in Faizabad that is now part of Ayodhya? It was because he knew that India had to re establish its stolen faith by erecting a temple for Ram that will reignite the 1.30 billion Hindus faith .It will allow to rebuild India based on the principle of Ram meaning equality for all, justice for all and development of the country to provide a better life for all.

Ram did not say that only Hindus should benefit if they followed his principles . He said it was and has to be inclusive of all people who live in new Bharat ( India) irrespective of caste, creed and religions. This is what Netaji also wanted so it was Netaji who in a secret meeting in Balia told to start the movement to bring Ram back and set him up in a glorious new temple. It will bring back the faith in Ram and the country will follow Ram’s principles.

This movement cost a lot of lives but eventually it succeeded when the Supreme Court gave a decision and allowed the construction of a new Ram Temple in Ayodhya that was inaugurated on January 22, 2024. Read my blog here called The day the river ran red.
Some people say Netaji did not die because there is no proof that he died in Faizabad. The body that was cremated was completely covered so no one saw the face.

But the fact remains that he would have been over 110 years old if he was still living so most people just assume that he is dead.

What happened after the death of Netaji Bose in Faizabad?

People found more than 26 steel trunks in his room and demanded to see what they contained so that they could know who was this mysterious man but the Allahabad High Court had ordered the trunks to be safeguarded under lock and key but later gave the permission to open them in order to make a detailed inventory and list all the items in the presence of videographers and many lawyers. What they found surprised the whole country.

One trunk contained a binocular made in Germany as well as a typewriter also German made, reading glasses , smoking pipes , a Rolex watch, numerous photos of Netaji's relatives, his parents, his school and college mates, compass, a map of Nepal , many hand written letters to his family in Kolkata and friends etc. to prove that he was the real Netaji. In other trunks they found numerous documents related to the INA and his letters to his subordinates and their responses. There were numerous newspaper cuttings that had published some news about him .

But the clinching proof came when a reporter took his hand written letters written long ago and his latest hand written notes to a famous hand writing expert in the United States who after very thorough examination concluded that the two sets of hand written notes came from the same person.

The DNA samples that were collected from Gumnami Baba and sent to a testing lab in India to compare with the DNA of his living relatives was to prove that the mysterious saint was Netaji, but the results were kept hidden for 6 months. When released, other DNA experts noted that the data were tampered with because proper procedures were not followed. The lab technician could not be contacted because he was afraid to tell the truth. Who gave the order to tamper with the DNA samples, no one will admit. Obviously, the tampering order must have come from somewhere to cast doubts on the real identity of the saint in Faizabad, but people are unfazed.

They now believe beyond any doubt that Netaji had returned and lived anonymously in Faizabad because what was found in his 26 steel trunks could have only belonged to him like his glasses, his pipe, his watch, his binoculars and numerous family photos plus numerous hand written documents and lots of books in many languages. Netaji spoke good German and many other languages.

Gumnami Baba most likely died in Faizabad but what is important now is that the country is guided in the direction Netaji wanted and outlined where people will prosper through massive development and job opportunities, where people will live in peace and get the justice if they are wronged. It was the dream of Netaji to make a new India where people of all faiths will live together in harmony and work together to make a better country. Such heroes never die because they live in the hearts of 1.30 billion grateful Indians .

A worthy resolve

Source :  Google photo of Shabnam Shaikh

Synopsis : A time comes in every generation when some youngsters and adults come forward to challenge the rigid society where they live under harsh laws imposed on them by the outdated religious leaders who prevent their aspirations of freedom to choose their faith and a new way of life . Moslems no matter where they live in the world also want to improve their life by getting the education and skills that can help them out of poverty and into a bright future but they also want to return to their ancestral faith they were forced to leave to become Moslem. The blog tells you the story of a brave young Moslem girl who made a worthy resolve to walk 1450 kms from Mumbai to Ayodhya where she will pray in the new temple of Lord Ram , her God ,to show her devotion and fealty to Ram.

I avidly followed the progress made everyday by a 21 year old Moslem girl who walked from Mumbai to reach Ayodhya to see the Lord Ram statue who was recently placed in the majestic new temple being built there. She wore a black hijab to cover her head according to her Islamic faith but carried a saffron flag of Hindu devotees of Shri Ram to show her piety for Ram so one day she decided to walk to Ayodhya that is some 1450 kms from Mumbai . She told the world that Ram was for the humanity and not just the Hindus who revered him as their God . She declared that she was the descendant of Ram as all the humanity was.

It did not sit well with fundamentalist mullahs of Islam who did not like this young college student to declare that she being a Moslem revered Ram as her deity and was absolutely determined to walk the great distance alone carrying a 20 kg. backpack . She was afraid of the hoodlums who were sent by the mollahs to threaten her so she asked the government to provide her with security that was provided. She was ridiculed by some Moslems in Mumbai who gathered somewhere to show her their black flags and even threatened her with stone pelting but she was brave and continued her journey that presented her many challenges.

The cold of the winter season, thick fog , rain and lonely road passing through forested areas with no humans to be seen anywhere did not dampen her will to continue so she walked alone shivering but carrying her backpack and her firm resolve that no matter what challenges she faced, she will one day reach Ayodhya.

Her journey was flashed by her in You tube daily so her story went viral that brought her to the attention of millions in India and abroad who like me also followed her progress. She walked some 30 kms everyday not knowing where she will find some food and where she will spend the night but her story spread all over the route she had taken so at every stop people waited for her with food and flower garlands that they put on her neck and hugged her .

Some people touched her feet to show their respect and love for her and others greeted her with drums and flutes while some reporters walked with her for a while and posted their videos on their TV channels. Soon two boys joined her and walked with her so they too could reach Ayodhya. She was given police protection while on the road so they too walked with her and asked other policemen to pick up the relay. Her feet swelled up and had blisters so she limped on as best as she could with a smile on her lovely face and never complained.

She told everyone that Lord Ram had called her and was always with her to give her strength and blessings so people marveled at her resolve because she had undertaken a great decision to walk the entire 1450 kms no matter how long she took to reach Ayodhya. Her two Hindu companions who were impressed by her courage and devotion to Ram joined her to walk with her all the way to Ayodhya gave her foot massage and shoulder rub in the evening to ease her pain although they too were young and had blisters of their own.

People greeted them everywhere with food and flowers but she asked to meet with the Chief minister of Madhya Pradesh who received her and the boys very warmly and ordered that she must have police protection all the way so that she does not come to any harm from the anti Hindu people. Some people with medical training gave her ointment to sooth her blisters that they lovingly bandaged while others brought her bottled water, sweets and fruits but somewhere on the road some bad policemen treated her badly and called her names that made her cry so she appealed to the Chief Minister Yogi of Uttar Pradesh to give her protection that he ordered immediately and sacked the offending policemen.

Her name is Shabnam Shaikh who has become the media darling because she is a young Muslim girl who is walking all the way from Mumbai to Ayodhya to visit the Ram temple there and pray at the feet of Ram there which is quite unusual in India where Muslims discourage or threaten any Muslim person who shows piety to Hindu God and pray in Ram temple. The mullahs who pretend to be their spiritual leaders start issuing edicts to punish such a person . Shabnam ignored their threats and continued her journey making her You tube followers admire her more. She declared that she is not afraid of any mullahs and said that the country is governed by the constitution and not by some mullahs issuing ban on her. She was free to go anywhere and pray at any temple.

At every stop she chanted victory to Lord Ram and long live mother India that the crowd around her joyfully repeated while dancing and beating their drums. Her shoes were ripped and clothes were in tatters so she finally stopped in a town to buy her new shoes and fresh clothes. Sometimes she and her two companions who had become her fast friends slept in police stations or in hotel rooms that the owner provided for free and gave them all the food they could eat.

The whole country was watching this brave girl and her determination of walking even in the rain but she smiled and kept on walking while keeping her parents in Mumbai posted by her cell phone on her progress in reaching Ayodhya. She shivered because of winter temperature but somehow tried to keep herself warm .Her companions also suffered the cold air but kept her company and tolerated the pain in their legs as well but y never complained.

Then one day Shabnam arrived in Ayodhya after walking for 41 days where she and the two boys were given a rousing welcome by the people and the religious priests who put flower garlands on them and put vermilion paint on their forehead that all Hindus wear to show their devotion To Ram. What Shabnam achieved was something that made her parents proud but it also encouraged thousands of Moslems who walked great distances to reach Ayodhya to show their devotion to Ram. It was unprecedented in India to see Moslems walking with Hindus in great harmony to go to Ayodhya and show their respect to Lord Ram.

Shabnam entered the temple where she prayed and received the blessings of the priests and took selfies with them in front of the statue of Ram. Another Moslem girl also called Shabnam walked from Delhi to Ayodhya and covered some 750 kms to show her veneration for Ram.

The Indian moslems were converted to Islam by the Moghul kings who came to India to establish their empire using brutal force and intimidation . The Hindus were given the choice of accepting to become Moslem or die so they became converted out of fear. The Moghal kings looted the wealth of the country, destroyed thousands of Hindu temples all over the country and spread Islam using threat.

They built mosques at the looted site of temples like in Ayodhya where the Hindus after waiting for justice for over 550 years took the matter into their own hands and demolished the illegal mosque there They have also vowed to take back all the destroyed Hindu temples. from the Moslems and rebuild them to restore them to their former glory. Read my blog here called The day the river ran red.

This process has already started in Benares and now in Ayodhya. Now many Moslems like Shabnam say that Hindus should be given back all their places of worship and the country should be declared a Hindu nation. Hundreds of thousands of Moslems have rejoined their ancestral faith and have vowed the fealty to Ram . All over the world, very large number of Moslems are reconverting back to Hinduism because they say that only Hindu religion can bring peace among people.

These ex moslems are blazing the trail of returning home meaning becoming Hindu again because they see no future in Islam that preaches hate against the non Moslems . Now they acknowledge that only through peace the country can make progress to become a developed nation so they are willingly joining hands with others to march in harmony and brotherhood toward a brighter future for themselves and the future generation.

The fundamentalist Moslems say that their faith comes first before the nation but this outdated belief system has only brought them poverty and misery because hate for others who are not like them kept them backward and uneducated so they cannot join in the process of nation building. The vast majority of Moslems fall into the category of poor and backward class called Peshmanda Moslems who eke out a poor living and now want to change it. Their children are now getting the education they need to join the work force to lift their living standard for the first time since independence of 1947.

Girls like Shabnam are a new breed of youngsters who have come forward to defy the status quo and are challenging the old hardliners who refuse to welcome her vision of a bright new India where everyone has the right to join the workforce to make India a 20 trillion dollar economy in the next 10 years. One can already see what is happening now in India that is well underway to become a developed country in the decades to come.

I admire the courage of this young lady and thousands like her who are the leaders who will bring about the change to a brighter future for them by taking the bold steps and to live in harmony and peace with others.

The day the river ran red

Source.  Google photo of the Ram temple under construction in Ayodhya in India

Synopsis: It is always difficult to read the pages of history books where you learn about the injustices people suffered all over the world who only wanted to claim freedom to live the life they wanted and to practice their faith in peace. When it was denied, they took to the streets to protest and were killed so their history was literally written in their blood. Today this struggle for justice and freedom still continues in many parts of the world. Read this sad story of the sacrifices Hindus in India made to live and pray to their Gods peacefully.

The day the Saryu river ran red with the blood of the Hindu devotees of Shri Ram in Ayodhya, I was in my hometown. Someone came running out of breath to tell us that there was a massacre in Ayodhya that day in 1992

I was in shock like everyone else because no one expected to hear that the police had opened fire on unarmed Hindus who were protesting at the site of a mosque. They wanted to demolish the  Babri masjid that had been built there where there used to be a temple of Ram. It was ordered by the Mughal King Babur in the 15th century to be demolished to build a mosque. This was not the only Hindu temple demolished by Babur who was a fanatic Moslem . His descendants who ruled India for centuries did the same in the name of their faith because their Quran approved it.

All over India, the Hindu temples were desecrated and  demolished to build mosques built on top often with the stones recovered from the demolished temples. Other monuments were erected in Delhi called Qutub Minar that is the tallest tower in India  but the Islamic rulers destroyed the temple complex there and used its stones to build the tower. They did not care to hide the markings on the stones that clearly showed that it was a Hindu temple there , such was their arrogance. They were the rulers so they could do anything they wanted like killing of Hindus and destruction of their holy places of worship.

After all, their Quran clearly  mentions that such horrible acts against the non-believers were quite praiseworthy so the fanatics said that they were only following what was written in their holy book. They felt no remorse . What is surprising is the fact that such horrible acts are still being committed by the fanatics who do it in the name of their holy book and  to make terrorism a common household word worldwide.

The large number of Hindu devotees in Ayodhya that day were only claiming what was theirs so they demolished the mosque practically with their bare hands until the armed policemen arrived and opened fire on them. Their blood flowed to the river Saryu and made it red while the vultures circled high above. They were immune to the wail and agony of those who were injured while the policemen refilled their carbines with bullets like those German guards in the concentration camps of Germany.

The police fired some 500 rounds of bullets on innocent people. The dead and the injured were too numerous to count.

So people asked who gave the order to fire on the unarmed Hindu devotees? It was the chief minister of the State who won election by his appeasement policy toward the Moslem voters  who helped him win election that made him the chief minister of that state.  The police said that they were simply following orders  just like the guards of Auschwitz and similar camps who gunned down 6 million jews in Europe  and showed no mercy or remorse. They too were following orders.

The sad part is that this Hindu hating chief minister was given a national award after his death by the present government of India for his black deeds. It claims to support the demands of all Hindus in the country who want their Ram temple to be rebuilt.

Finally after waiting for some 550 years, the Supreme Court of India came to a decision that Ram temple should be built again in Ayodhya so the Hindus contributed millions of Rupees for the construction. The prime minister laid the foundation of the temple in 2019 after the verdict and the construction began. It will be built with private donation so the money keeps flowing to the coffers from donors all over the country and abroad. Some have sold all their land and properties to do so while the Hindu diaspora living abroad continues to send money in great quantity.

It is interesting that some Moslems now admit that Babur committed a great sin 550 years ago so they are now trying to atone for it by donating money to build the grand temple in Ayodhya. People from many Moslem countries are also donating money and many Moslem leaders will attend the ceremony planned for the 22nd of January this year.

If you turn on the TV , you will see the progress being made of the construction of the huge Ram temple in Ayodhya where the Babri masjid used to stand  and where the statue of Ram will soon be established by the Prime Minister of India on January 22, 2024. The completion of the entire temple and its auxiliary buildings on the premises may take a few more years but the devotees want to see their God established there as soon as possible so thousands of workers are toiling day and night to meet the deadline of January 22 this coming month.

But the struggle to build a Ram temple started some 500 years ago before the advent of the British in India but the Moguls who ruled India ignored this demand and went on to demolish more Hindu holy temples in very large numbers. Those who resisted were killed so the slaughter continued even after India became independent. Then came the British to colonize and stayed until a great patriot warrior called Netaji Bose chased them out through his armed struggle in 1947. The British showed no interest in rebuilding the Ram temple for the Hindus when they ruled.

The Hindus took the matter to the Supreme court but there as well the case remained dormant due to clever lawyers of the Moslems who had no interest in resolving the issue. Now some 500 years had passed so the Hindus became impatient and took the matter into their own hands on the day when the police came to kill them. Those who survived, vowed to continue their struggle and waited until a new Hindu leader came to power who declared in his election manifesto that it was his top priority to build the Ram temple.

Then one day the Supreme Court of India gave the verdict in the favor of the Hindus in a unanimous agreement that Ram temple had been illegally demolished by Babur so a new Ram temple should be built there. The whole country and all the Hindus living abroad rejoiced and started collecting money to build the greatest temple ever built in the country.

Babur must be turning in his grave somewhere but his followers did not take kindly to this discomfiture of Babur so they have vowed to someday demolish the temple and rebuild a mosque there. It reminds me of the Jews who still wait for justice in their favor to build their temple at the temple mount of Jerusalem but no one knows how many more centuries they have to wait. Will their Supreme court one day give them justice by giving a verdict that the mosque built on their holy temple mount was illegally built by the Muslims? In the matter of faith, people are willing to die to achieve the goal just like in India. Over 6 million Jews perished because someone hated them. How many more have to die before their temple mount is cleared where they will be allowed to rebuild their temple?

All religions like the Christianity, Islam and others have their holy places like the Vatican or the Mecca except the Hindus who have suffered for centuries in the hands of the hordes of assailants who came to India to loot, desecrate the Hindu temples and massacre them. Others were forcibly converted to Islam with the threat of death.

What is happening in India today is a mass revival of a Hindu nationalist sentiment that is widespread that no longer wants to wait any longer and wants to rebuild all the demolished temples  in the country. This revival is what the non Hindus are least expecting and are at a loss to understand how to counter this nationwide movement.

Some are resorting to violence while others are planning to blow up the new Ram temple but they also know that they will not succeed . When the 80% population that follows Hinduism and decides enough is enough, it will bring out the collective will of more than a Billion people. No one foreign religion can withstand such a tsunami like what happened in Spain centuries ago. After a fierce battle with the Moslems , the Spaniards won and chased the deeply entrenched Moslems forever.Watch the movie El Cid to learn more.

The imposition of a foreign religion on the native population in any country faces stiff resistance often leading to bloodshed so today it is an obsolete idea. Now people fight back through the courts , mass demonstrations everywhere or simply destroy the illegally built edifices by the outsiders. The courts can delay a case but can never dismiss it without hearing so people wait. Then comes a change one day when the old hard headed judges retire and are replaced by more pragmatic young judges who favor a verdict that gives justice to prove that they are not called justices for nothing.

It takes courage to face up to the challenges the societies face everywhere so some people step up to shed their blood if need be. Such people become immortal and are mentioned in the pages of history forever. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Steven Biko, Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Walter Sisulu, Kwame Nkrumah, Che Guevara, Djamila Boupacha, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Ajaad, Khudiram Bose, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Queen Laksmi Bai, Udham Singh all sacrificed themselves because they stood up against the tyrants and injustice. Their sacrifice won them the end of Apartheid, end of discrimination against the blacks, end of slavery, end of the British empire and forced conversion to other religions.

These pages are not enough to list all the heroes who died so that others could live freely but one thing is sure. There will always be people who will protest the injustice and fight it even if they have to shed their own blood.

Let us hope that the waters of Saryu in Ayodhya or anywhere will never again be stained by the blood of the people who only wanted justice.

I wish the Indian leaders will recognise the sacrifices the devotees of Ram made in Ayodhya in 1992 and will write in golden letters their names  in a plaque to be placed in the new Ram temple  to remind the generations to come that their sacrifices were not in vain.

But who reads my blogs and who will put such a plaque in Ayodhya? The blind folded lady holding the balance of justice in front of every courtroom in the world sheds silent tears at all the injustice in the world.

A few years ago, I took up the idea that I could write about some social issues about which I felt strongly enough and let the world know how I felt about them. So, I became a sort of armchair activist to bring a focus on the ills that people face in any society so that they could become more aware and take some actions to face these issues squarely to find a solution. Sometimes I tried to make people aware about the danger of drugs, alcohol addiction, gambling or child trafficking. At other times I wrote about the menace of prostitution or the poaching of precious animals to sell their skins. I also wrote about how to save the river dolphins or the peacocks that are being decimated by feral cats and dogs in India.

I wrote on numerous topics including travel to exotic countries, arts and crafts of many countries and presented power points on them, or heavenly foods in India and other topics that I cared about and wrote extensively since I started writing in 2016 and published them all as blogs using many free platforms available to me.

I did not stop there. I also wrote extensively about the great people who brought fundamental changes in their country through their struggle and sacrifices. I received thousands of comments from my readers in more than 140 countries, so I know that you my readers like to read what I write so I am grateful to you and thank you. Please read my complete list of blogs I have published so far in the link given here. (https://aumolc.wordpress.com/2023/05/13/a-list-of-all-of-my-blogs-2/ )

But now that I am reaching the end of my writing career after having published more than 440 blogs and my biography in 14 chapters that will tell you about all the countries where I lived and worked for many years and of my experience there as only, I could write about, I felt that I was missing something.

So today I thought of writing about a great lady who had tremendous influence on me as I was growing up in India. So read this blog and send me your comments. I will look forward to reading them and publish them.

The story of a great lady

A beautiful child was born in a respectable Brahmin family in India long ago after her mother fasted and prayed in a Shiva temple to have a baby girl, so Lord Shiva granted her wish, and a beautiful child was born to the great joy and ecstasy of her parents. She was considered God’s gift to the couple so she could not be denied anything she wanted. She was the apple of their eyes and was pampered but she was not the only child. She was born in a family of three brothers and two more children came after her making it a large family but that was quite normal in those days meaning a hundred years ago.

It was the period of the British Raaj in India when some missionaries tried to bring education to the girls by opening schools for them and going house to house to convince the parents to send their children to the mission schools. But in those days one hundred years ago, female education was not popular because the parents did not see the need for a formal education for the girls.

It was not known if the pretty child attended a missionary school, but her mother and father taught her the Bengali alphabets, so she learned to write beautifully and took avid interest in reading Bengali classics.

Her loving mother taught her many skills in crochet, embroidery and cross stitch that she developed at a very early stage. A child in those days was taught all the skills she needed to become a successful home maker like cooking, knitting and making numerous types of pickles. She watched her elders to learn how to raise a baby and how to care for him or her.

As a child she perhaps had all the aspirations all children had like getting some dolls to play with or other toys or making friends with other children of her age, but she was born at a time when child marriage was practiced so at a very tender age of 13, she was told to get ready to get married. She was still a child who did not know what it meant to be married. She was sad that her wonderful childhood was to end so soon, and she would leave the comfortable home where she was the pampered child. She was scared of going away from her parents with a stranger toward an unknown future.

She worried about the groom and most of all who could he be because in the arranged marriage, the bride did not get to meet the groom before marriage. Her parents chose a gentleman for her and started to prepare for her marriage in earnest. It meant getting her gold jewelries and fine silk saris ready. They made all the preparations like the gifts for the groom and his family and what food to serve the guests. It meant a lot of expense on their part that perhaps included a dowry, but the child was unaware of the details. Even the invitation letters were printed, and a date had been fixed after consulting a priest and the Hindu almanac for an auspicious day and time but soon came a twist that no one had even thought of.

The would-be groom made a big mistake by demanding to see the very young bride-to-be before marriage that her father took as an offense because it was against the practice in those days, so he abruptly canceled the wedding that shocked everybody including the child. She was devastated and knew that canceling the wedding at the last minute meant a loss of face for her parents and a stain on her family. She could not understand why the demand to see her before marriage was such a big deal for her parents and why her father took offense. She was a beautiful child and wore no veil.

At this time her elder brother came to her rescue and brought the news that he knew of a young man of a good Brahmin family who could be persuaded to marry his sister. He was only 22 who worked as an accountant for the British somewhere, so her father agreed to meet him and convince him that the girl was a gem, so the marriage was arranged, and her mother shed a tear of joy. She had prayed hard to find a suitable match for her daughter at this late hour which was a very difficult thing to do but it all ended well when her prayers were answered.

But after the marriage, the groom who was only 22 years old said that he was not ready to bring his young wife to his station because there was no facility for her there like a decent house among other things. It would have been very difficult for a young bride to live with him in primitive conditions because she was from a city who had never seen a village.

So, the new husband made arrangement for her to go and live in his native village among his relatives until he was ready to bring her to his station sometime later. It was shocking to the girl who dreaded living in a village among strangers without light and running water, but she had no choice so one day few men arrived to bring her to the village in faraway Bengal first by train which was a novelty for her because she had never been on a train.

It was a very long and stressful journey for her because she did not know anything about the geography and where the village was, so she was worried. She took a leap of faith to take such a long journey with strangers because somehow, she believed her husband who had promised to rescue her, but she did not know when.

Then from Kolkata, they boarded a steamboat that brought her to the main river near the village, and then to the village by a small dinghy because the large steamboat could not enter the small and shallow stream. No one talked to her during her long journey. She was very shy and could not say to her fellow travelers to let her off somewhere so that she could relieve herself, so she bit her lips and tolerated her pain silently.

You can imagine how shocked she was when finally, the dinghy arrived at the village where a few men and women stood with a kerosene lamp to receive her. All she saw was total darkness and heard the howling of jackals, but her ordeal was not over yet. The women examined her crucially from head to toe as was the custom, but she endured and finally she was able to relieve herself. Women understood her problem right away and brought her to a primitive toilet.

It was all a very new experience for her, but she steeled herself to live in the Godforsaken village among total strangers as best as she could and wait patiently for her husband who had promised to bring her to his place in the future. Later in her life she talked of her time in that village with some nostalgia and how she was able to adjust to live in mud houses without light and water. The stream was just nearby so she got used to carry water from there, learned to cook Bengali food and many other things while patiently waiting for her husband to come.

She could read and write but letters from her husband were rare. It brought her tremendous joy when she got one. Then one day he arrived in the village and told her to get ready because he had found a house where they could now live as a family. India is a big country, so the train journey took many days to reach the place where he worked that is presently called Pakistan now.

Thus started her nomadic life that brought her to all parts of India because her husband was transferred from one place to the next by the British. She was a young woman now and a mother of many children, but she raised them well in spite of frequent transfer from one city to the next.

But a time came when her children needed formal education, so they moved to her hometown where they found a rented place. She was very happy to return to her town where she was born and raised and because the kids started schooling while she became a devoted mother attending to all their needs. She prepared tasty meals for them, washed their clothes and ironed them, prepared their lunch boxes and even painted their Keds with white chalk.

She stayed up whole night to nurse when a kid had fever and sometime tended two or three who fell sick at the same time. She was fond of her youngest son and told him bedtime stories and he became very close to her and ran all errands for her. He patiently put colored threads in her needle so that she could make beautiful cross stitch work of art. He would help her grind the salt or turmeric in the heavy stone grinder. He would grate the mangoes for her to make pickles and he would run to the market to buy the things she ordered to make sweets.

She gave most of her gold jewelry to her husband when he found it difficult to find enough money to build her a new home. She brought her eldest daughter home when she became a widow, sent her to school and later college so that she could get a job and become independent. She persuaded her second daughter to undergo tubal ligation to limit the number of children because her husband did not earn much. She convinced her husband to let her third daughter to take up the government job she was offered in a nearby town so that she too could be independent. This way she helped everyone in her family until her last breath.

She was old now and a widow because her husband died of cancer a few years ago but her help during his sickness was exemplary. She brought him food every day and took bus to reach the hospital when no one offered her a seat. Such a devoted wife and her self-sacrifice is very hard to find. She was big hearted and gave money to orphans and to many temples as charity. She gave food or money to any beggar who came to her gate.

She collected rice and daal from many houses during Durga Pooja festival feast because there was not enough money to buy the things. Being a devout Hindu, she prayed every day, read the scriptures and kept a beautiful image of Lakhsmi, the Goddess of wealth in her prayer room.

When her youngest son declared that he was going to Vietnam to work there as a volunteer, she happily chose a piece of cloth to make a suit for his travel. She went by train to Kolkata to see him off at the airport and she wrote him loving letters in her beautiful writing and he in a distant land waited eagerly to receive her letters. She was happy as a child when he brought her to Agra one time to see the Taj Mahal and when he brought her to a movie she enjoyed tremendously.

She gave her blessing to him when he decided to marry in a foreign country and lovingly received the new bride when she arrived in India. She braided her hair and gave her gold bracelets. She massaged the newly born baby every day and loved her granddaughter and the baby grandson.

But now she was nearing 90 and feeble. She could not see very well and seldom went outside her home. The son always returned to India to see her, caressed her snow-white hair lovingly and secretly left money under her pillow. She shed a tear when he said that her sacrifice to raise all her children was the reason he and his siblings did well, got good education and good jobs. She took care of them when sick and stayed up whole night to fan their hot fever racked bodies. She patiently and lovingly fed them medicine and nourishing food to bring them back to health.

We know that we all get old and die someday but are we ever prepared for the day when we see our loved ones die? One day the dreaded news came by phone that she died so the son flew to India to attend to her last rites. She left a very big void in his life that brings secret tears to his eyes. She thought of her daughters and left them money.

Now you can guess who the great lady was. She was my mother. I am her youngest son. I still mourn her and remember her as a great lady who gave me birth and brought me up to be what I am today. I was blessed to have such a mother who left such a mark on me. I sometime look up to see the bright twinkling stars and wonder if she is now among them. I miss her very much.
