An ancient scourge called slavery

Synopsis : Slavery is an ancient scourge that bedevils humankind even today although it has been in practice since the ancient times. Laws have been enacted to ban it but people still practice slavery where the laws are weak and poorly implemented. Now women are lured into prostitution through the promise of jobs but they end up as sex slaves .Children are forced to work in brick factories because the parents borrowed a paltry sum they can't pay back so there are many forms of slavery.

An ancient scourge called slavery

I have not willingly wanted to write about this topic because it makes me sad to think that human beings are treated this way even today although slavery is a very ancient crime against humanity.

We have read that the practice of slavery since the dawn of history has been prevalent in many parts of the world but what is unbelievable is that it continues even today in many forms that I will explain later.

The ancient Egyptians built theirs temples, cities and pyramids using slave labor of Jews among others whom Moses saved and brought out to populate the Palestine according to the Old Testament after a very long struggle with the Pharaoh who would not let them go.

The Egyptians needed the slaves to build their cities and temples because their people were mostly farmers who were needed to grow food to feed the population and the slaves and also because growing food was more important than building temples and pyramids. So the farmers were cattle herders, food growers and makers of certain essential things like potteries, weaving clothes and other useful things.

During the period when they were not busy with farming or other such activities related to farming, they dug canals, repaired and maintained them, worked in quarries to cut stones for the buildings required by the king, built or repaired their own homes, made agricultural tools and baskets and paid taxes that were meticulously collected. If they failed to pay their taxes due to bad harvest or other calamities like locusts etc., the sons were taken away to be made into soldiers in the army to fight endless wars the pharaohs fought. The daughters were also taken away to work as maids for the rich people. They were not necessarily slaves but they could not run away or go back to their villages so essentially they were not free to do what they wanted.

The slaves were forced to build the cities and pyramids or temples but they were fed by the farmers who baked the bread for them and supplied the wheat and barley their wives then made into flour. The common people when not farming also worked as carriers of stones needed for the massive construction all over the country. They brought these stones to the construction sites using their dhows, boats or even floated them using goat skin bladders but they were not slaves.

Egyptians raided the Nubian country in the south that is now part of Sudan to capture slaves there but also from Ethiopia. The war booty always included slaves who were then put to work under harsh conditions.

The Romans later on used the slaves extensively to build their vast empire and treated the slaves harshly as well. They needed slaves to power their galleys, build their roads and baths, amphitheaters all over the Mediterranean and often turned their avowed enemies into slaves even if they were Romans.

When Ben Hur did not give in to the demands of Messala, he contrived to put his mother and sister in a leper’s colony on fake charges and had BenHur arrested and put in a galley ship as a slave. These galley slaves seldom lasted a few years and had to be constantly resupplied.
The Aztecs and Maya all used their war prisoners as slaves and often sacrificed them to appease their Gods. Their cruelty to the slaves had no limits.

But the worst slave masters were the Africans themselves who would sell a rival tribe wholesale to the Arab slavers by conspiring with the slavers as to when to attack and show the roads or the weakness in the defense of the tribes.

The Arab slavers were Muslims who believed that their Koran sanctioned slavery so they had no qualms about capturing slaves, killing them if they resisted and frog marched them to the coast where the slave ships waited. Those who survived such harsh treatment that included beatings, starvation and other forms of punishment were sold in Zanzibar market through the rogue agents like Tippu Tib who then made a handsome profit that he shared with the sultan of Zanzibar.

The early explorers  like Dr.Livingstone were also missionaries who while exploring the unknown interiors of Africa also tried to spread Christianity at the behest of their sponsors back in England  and constantly wrote back home about the cruelty of slavery, mass murders by the Arab slavers and the utter inhuman treatment of the black inhabitants of Africa by the slavers all in the name of business. This eventually resulted in an act of the parliament in England that banned slavery and Dr.Livingstone himself was able to free many captured slaves making him very unpopular with slavers.

But before the ban came into effect, who were the people buying and selling slaves and making enormous profit? They were Englishmen, Scotts, Dutch and Belgians and many others who had this trade firmly in hand and supplied slaves to the plantations in the southern states in the United States, to the British colonies, to the Islands of Haiti etc. Haiti was the first to rebel and gain freedom from the slave masters but the Americans were making great profit from slavery so they fought tooth and nail to keep them, lost the civil war and technically the slavery was ended. The discrimination against black people still continues but that is a topic for another blog perhaps.

So the story of slavery is quite ancient. It is still practiced openly in some countries in Africa like Mauritania and in the middle east where it is carried on in the name of Koran that approves it .
The Dutch voortrekkers in South Africa were particularly hateful of black people whom they considered sub human and worse than animals so they treated them the same because they were after land and territory where they could start their farms. This brought them into conflict with the Zulus and other tribes as well so the bloodshed was the results. Sometimes the Zulus massacred the Dutch and other times the Zulus were slaughtered whole sale by the well armed Dutch.

The African spears and arrows were no match for the guns so eventually they lost and the Dutch took over the South African country where they ruled using apartheid as the state policy. The so called great Mahatma Gandhi who was a lawyer in those days particularly loathed the blacks whom he called the savages with bad habits, low morality and worse than animals who were not equal to the colored people like himself.

There is a story of a Peace Corps girl who wanted to ride with the Bedouins in the Saharan desert to explore the deep south so she found her camel ride but the Bedouin made her his slave right away, raped her repeatedly and finally locked her up  in a mud walled village room dressed as a man . This poor girl suffered unbelievable harsh treatment in the hands of her slaver until she one day escaped from her prison and was able to reach the civilization and saved her life. Her naiveté was so surprising in this day and age.

Hitler took slavery to a new height when he ordered all Jews, gypsies and many other minorities to be rounded up and systematically killed by gas or shot in concentration camps but others were forced to work in factories to make the war materials or labor camps to shore up defenses. Jewish girls were particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse and beatings. The diary of Ann Frank is worth reading.
The doctors used the slaves to experiment on with dangerous drugs or put them in ice cold water just to see how long it took for them to die. Such abuse in Europe continued until the allied invasion but what they discovered was more than shocking leading to Nuremburg trials.

Now the ISIS or Daesh in the middle east is trying to put Hitler to shame by enslaving, torturing and beheadings of minorities, shias, kurds, LGBT people and  will someday have to answer to a UN tribunal for crimes against humanity but just like Hitler, they show no remorse in treating other human beings this way.

Modern day slavery :

Now I can discuss how the modern day slavery works. It is quite widespread in many parts of the world. The UN makes resolutions after resolution but the member states only pay lip service to the implementation of anti slavery laws saying that they need resources, man power and training which they don’t have.

Whatever the excuse the slavery continues in many forms. One method is to lure young village girls in Nepal, India, China, Cambodia, Laos etc. to the cities with the promise of a good job and then promptly sell them to brothels from where they cannot escape.

Remember the movie Taxi driver where the taxi driver (Robert de Niro) unable to tolerate the exploitation of young girls by the pimps in brothels takes it upon himself to do something about it, kills the brothel owner and the goons and rescues the girl  Jodie Foster and sends her home ?

In real life there are no such taxi drivers who come to the rescue of these poor girls although one former prostitute in Nepal has rescued many girls from grief through her NGO and has set up shelters for them but such help are too little and too late for the vast numbers of women  who are being trafficked this way. Prostitution is a very big business everywhere so these crooks will do anything to keep the girls in bondage because they are their milking cows.

East European girls are particularly targeted by the mafia that operates throughout EU and makes enormous profit. They are sold to mid eastern brothels in Dubai, Doha and elsewhere. Now the ISIS lures them with promise of handsome partners but sells them as slaves who can then be used by any one for sex anytime. There is no escape from this hell for these girls so some kill themselves and other trying to escape are shot.

But the abuse and exploitation that goes on in Asia is mind boggling.

The female workers who work in the clothing factories in Bangladesh and other such countries are very vulnerable. They are paid very low wages to make clothes that are sold in other countries at high price making enormous profit for the owner but they are literally locked up while working.  There was a fire that broke out in such a place in Dhaka killing over a thousand hapless women because they could not escape. The doors were locked.

The story of bonded child labor is also very tragic. They are sold to brick makers who make them work very hard for their age and beat them if they try to escape just because their parents borrowed a paltry sum of money that they could not pay . This is the modern day slavery.

The story of Man Singh is worth telling here as well.

He was a farmer in Bhind, Morena area of western part of Uttar Pradesh in India where the farming was very hard and the landlords who abused the farmers were harder. The farmers were often beaten if they could not pay their share of the harvest due to poor harvest and their women or daughters were taken away as maids and sexually abused. It got so bad that Man Singh decided to do something about it and formed an armed band to defend and fight for the abused farmers.

He killed many of the most abusive of the land owners and collected huge amount of money from the landlords by holding them hostage and other means. He then distributed this money to the poor farmers and bought more guns with the rest. He was the real Robin Hood except that there was no Sherwood Forest nearby so he hid in a place of eroded badland called behar where the police could never find him.

Now the policemen in north India are mostly from the landowning class so they saw nothing wrong in the practice of abuse of farmers. This is what their fathers, brothers and relatives did to keep a firm grip on power in rural areas so from their point of view it was Man Singh who was the culprit and he had to be killed by any means.

The police in India have lot of means and the full support of the government to boot  so one day they found Man Singh and riddled his body with 64 bullets which was an over kill but they hated Man Singh with a virulence that accounted for the 64 bullets. So Man Singh died a hero but nothing changes. The exploitation continues.

The vast number of children and young women who are trafficked worldwide and sold to brothels, brick factories, mines in Africa or in dangerous factories run into millions who cannot escape, cannot get any help from the governments or NGOs and live a tragic life.

So what has changed since the Egyptians used the whip on poor people thousands of years ago? Have we learned anything from our past inglorious history of cruelty towards our fellow human beings or have we degenerated into something worse?

I think there is a basic premise in slavery that says that the man abuses another man as long as he thinks he is superior to the abused therefore it is  justified in what he does to his fellow human being.
It can be the skin color or ethnicity or simply religion that is used as an excuse to mistreat another person and that too in this century of modern age. While it is true that many countries have eliminated slavery and all forms of human exploitation but many countries are unable to do so citing many difficulties.

I find it appalling that there are still people who consider themselves superior to a person of color so consider it their right to mistreat them with impunity. The United States in particular come to mind where almost every day a person of color is shot to death by the policemen for no apparent reason or for a reason that in other countries would be considered ludicrous. Is selling a cigarette or a CD a crime for which one needs to be killed? Apparently so in the US. Yet there is no accountability and such policemen are rarely punished or even reprimanded.

The KKK still exists and its members include policemen, judges and common white people who believe in white supremacy and continue to mistreat people of color.
The Black Panthers were banned but not the KKK so that is where we are in 2016.The election of Barack Obama was a landmark event in the annals of US history because such a thing had never happened before and will not happen any time soon but it shows that most people are decent people who do not believe in discrimination of any sort and have come to realize and appreciate the contributions made by the people of color throughout the history of mankind.

So why this shameful discrimination continues and who supports it? Why such people are not named and shamed and brought to justice? What will it take to stop the practice of slavery in all its forms and this abominable practice of treating a fellow human being in this shameful way? I have no answer.

The relevance of Kahlil Gibran's Prophet today

Synopsis : I read from time to time the Prophet written by Kahlil Gibran and find many words of wisdom and inspiration. I urge many people to read it and know the words that are so precious and so meaningful because of it's everyday application in our lives.

The relevance of Kahlil Gibran's Prophet today.

I often read  The Prophet  and find inspirations in every page and wonder if everyone read his book and followed the philosophy in real life, the world would be a far better place than it is today’
Sadly this is not true as many people have never even heard of Kahlil Gibran let alone read his most famous book .

The words in the Prophet  are more than beautiful. They are very meaningful and applicable today in one’s life if only people could understand it’s deep meanings and pure thoughts .They are also very plain and direct in a way that goes straight to the heart of the reader. I am particularly impressed by the chapter on Children and  on Giving so I will quote a few lines here from both the chapters and later explain their relevance today in our lives.

On Children   “  Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but  not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow which you can not visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them ,but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday”

I have seen time and again the parents trying to mold their children in their own fashion and according to their beliefs often with punishment if the children defy them. The cultural indoctrination starts as soon as the kid is born. In Hindu culture the kid is given talismans that they tie around the waist of the kid to ward off evil eyes. They put a dab of kohl on the forehead for the same reason. They do not give a proper name to the kid for one year due to some blind belief so the hospitals leave the name blank in the birth certificate causing problems later on.

Then starts the religious indoctrination when the kid is a bit older. The muslims send their kids to madrasas that teach them how to read Arabic so that they can learn to read Koran . I have seen how the mullahs beat innocent children with canes if they fail to recite Koran properly so the emphasis very early is on religion and not anything else because other knowledge like math and science or geography is secondary . These madrasas also teach hate to make these children the future talibans .

The Hindus do a bit better and send the kids to proper schools for a proper education so the religion as such is not emphasized but they try to guide the kids to become doctors or engineers later even if the kids do not have the aptitude or intelligence or even desire to be one.
Very few parents want to know what the kid wants to do in life ,what his interests are and give the helping hand to make them achieve their goals based on their interests. The main focus on their education seems to be able to earn a good living  because money is the mark of success in most societies.

Girls  come in second in the priority list for parents  at least in most of  Asia and the middle east where the emphasis  is on marriage later on that does not require a lot of education. It is true that the girls now a days are breaking out of that system and are proving to be high achievers in practically all fields of education .They are becoming excellent doctors, engineers, computer experts, teachers and even pilots flying combat jets in the air force  or jumbo jets in the private sector but this is a recent phenomenon. They often come from families where their mothers are uneducated  and the father is a low wage earner. Middle class girls do better in most countries.

The Prophet says :

You may strive to be like them ,but seek not to make them like you.

In some countries they give a very low priority to female education and the terrorists blow up their schools or kill the innocent girls just because of their mistaken beliefs that girls should not be educated because it perverts their minds and they may start questioning the ills of their society or religion . No society can grow without  educating the girls and no society can overcome it’s backward and primitive culture unless the children are taught to question the dictates of mullahs or priests who preach something that is not compatible with the modern world.  But it takes courage to stand up to these cruel people so the little girls shed tears and go back home when their schools are blown up by the terrorists until a Malala comes along . You may strive to be like them but seek not to make them like you but that is a great challenge to authority that they can not tolerate.

The Prophet says :

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

I find these words  very illuminating because they are so true . Just ask how many couples  make babies  just because they want to welcome a child and the answer will  surprise you. Women get pregnant with or without marriage just because of the hormones playing havoc with their bodies starting at a certain age which has nothing to do with clear thinking or a rational mind let alone morality.

The teen age pregnancy among the black women, latinos or others in the US is like an epidemic making them drop out of school at an early age causing all kinds of social problems . They are euphemistically called the single mothers raising illegitimate children just because they can not control their urges driven by raging hormones and pay the consequence ending up in poverty and depending on low paying jobs or social services . Such children often grow up with bad habits, drugs, violence and end up later in jails or worse.

Now if a couple who had a stable home, jobs and a safe environment and wanted to bring a child to this world where he or she would be given all the love, care and help to grow up to be a healthy beautiful child ,that child would have a far greater success in life than the illegitimate child of a single woman who drinks, probably takes drugs and survives  somehow but who is unable to give the kind of support  the child needs to succeed in life later on.

So all parents have a responsibility toward a child who totally depends on his/her parents  until he/she becomes independent  if indeed (and that is a big if) because it is required of them. The neglect of a child is a criminal offense in most societies .In some countries the state takes over the welfare of the child because the parents can not  or will not take care and do their duties. In poorer countries where such children are born everyday in very large numbers  of parents who are too poor or have other problems become  a terrible burden to the society because no one  cares for them and they grow up on streets trying to survive using their wits or using very limited  ability to survive.

You often see children as young as two or three begging  at street corners  while other children sell newspapers, flowers or cigarettes to earn a pittance that their greedy parents on drugs then take away.
The drug addiction among children in Afghanistan and other war torn countries are high and so is the child prostitution and violence perpetrated on them because there is  no social safety net and their government fails them in providing the safety and security they need. Their social services are poorly funded and what little remains disappears into the pockets of corrupt officials.

What is the future of such children when they grow up on whom the society has given up? Who will provide for them the kind of future they all deserve and grow up like other normal children?  My heart goes out to innocent children in India and Pakistan where they are sold as slaves to the brick makers  but there is no respite from them and no one to force the rescue of such children and put the slave masters in jail . Very small children are forced in Iran and many countries in the region to make carpets that are then sold in Europe or other countries at high prices  but you would never buy a carpet if you knew how these poor children are  beaten, poorly fed and forced to work under very inhuman conditions.

Can a country go forward where such children are neglected and who then grow up to be drug addicts, prostitutes , thieves and social deviants ? Does anyone really want to be a drug addict, a prostitute or a social deviant willingly ? I am sure these neglected children also want food everyday and a decent education, clean clothes and a loving home but who provides?  Can any society develop that produces mostly maids and servants ? Can any country make progress as a whole where  the vast majority of its citizens remain illiterate or have a fifth grade education or less?

The Cuban revolution  remains a bright spot in the annals of human history where the promises made were kept and where the education was made mandatory resulting in 95% literacy rate, where everyone gets the best medical care in the world  free of charge and where the poor were given land of their own making the land reform there a great success story. But the propaganda of the capitalist countries including the United States paint  a very different picture of Cuba and have blocked  that great country economically for a very long time because Cuba refused to play by their rules.

Now  I want to write about another matter that the Prophet says:

“There are those who give little of the much which they have – and they give it for recognition and their hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome.
You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. All you have shall some day be given. Therefore give now, that the reason of giving may be yours and not your inheritors.
And you receivers-and you are all receivers-assume no weight of gratitude, lest you lay a yoke upon yourself and upon him who gives.
For to be overmindful of your debt, is to doubt his generosity who has the free hearted earth for mother and God for father.”

Let me expand a bit on this topic of duty and giving .  As I wrote earlier, all parents have a duty towards their children who were born due to their desire to have children and not because children wanted to be born. If the children had any choice in the matter, many would refuse to be born into poverty, illegitimacy and to drug addict parents who are irresponsible to boot.

So all parents have a responsibility to raise their children properly . But when they start  thinking that they are doing a favor to the kids raising them and should one day make them pay for it, it becomes unworthy of them.

It reminds me of the famous  dialogue in the Godfather movie where the Godfather says  “Consider it as a gift on the day of my daughter’s wedding  but a time may come some day when you may have to repay this favor.  “

Now imagine a culture where the parents expect and demand from the daughters and sons  money, car or tickets to visit them specially if they are abroad and think of it as pay back time for what they have done for them and you will understand what values they hold dear in their lives . When these kids come home, they are expected to bring big boxes full of gifts for everyone, pay for large parties that the poor relatives  are eager to organize for them and even ask for “loans” to help them out of their poverty. These loans are seldom paid back.

So it all comes down to values. If you demand pay back for anything you have done for anyone in your life then it degrades the help you gave because it was with strings attached. The best help is when you do it selflessly. If the parents behave in a such a way towards their own children and make the kids feel that they have an obligation then it beats the purpose of parenting  . Parents love should be altruistic and not be like Godfather’s.

So the Prophet says:

And you receivers-and you are all receivers-assume no weight of gratitude, lest you lay a yoke upon yourself and upon him who gives.

For to be over-mindful of your debt, is to doubt his generosity who has the free hearted earth for mother and God for father.”

The children really do not owe their parents anything other than love and respect. People say that love and respect should be earned but Confucius says otherwise. All parents should be respected if not loved because parenting is a huge task most parents take on willingly and go through hardships themselves but never complain. Those are the ideal parents.

Religious intolerance

"RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE"

Synopsis : The religious intolerance has taken millions of lives and continues to do so even today because of the blind belief that their religion is the only true religion therefore the rest are not hence the conflict. This conflict cannot be resolved anytime soon unless people learn to be tolerant of others who are not like them and accept that people have a right to have their own religion and their own beliefs.

Religious intolerance

2002-940x500

Source : Google photo

The rise of religious intolerance worldwide is not a recent phenomenon. At some period or other in the history of mankind, most religions have shown intolerance to others who are not of their faith causing violence perpetrated in the name of faith. The Spaniards put to sword thousands of people in the new world when the natives would not accept the Christianity in Mexico, Peru or other countries. The invaders were always accompanied by the fanatic rabble priests of Spain who used the soldiers to intimidate or kill the locals in order to establish their brand of religion.

The Spanish inquisition was a classic example of religious intolerance when thousands of innocent people were tortured and burned at stake with the approval of Vatican in Europe and the new world. The healers, gypsies and many other simple people were put to death as heretics who had no one to defend them.

Again and again kings in Europe sent the crusading  army to free Jerusalem from the Moslems  and often slaughtered wholesale the Christians who were dressed like the natives there and mistaken for Moslems . The Knight Templars and other such groups formed to protect the Christians from others and fought tooth and nail to set up a Christian foothold in the Holy Land where Christ was born and was later occupied by the Moslems. Saladin and his army destroyed Jerusalem and killed its inhabitants to set up a mosque called Al Aqsa that still after centuries causes trouble  between the Arabs and the Israelis.

Some knights fled to Malta to set up Christianity there but were attacked by the Turkish nababs to bring Malta under their control. Many thousands of lives were lost in the process . So the history is full of atrocities perpetrated in the name of religion by one group or other and sadly it continues even today.

If you read the history of India, you will know that the Muslim invaders from Afghanistan brought with them the Islam that they forced upon a once Hindu or Buddhist population and shed blood of thousands of innocent people just because they were Hindus and would not accept any other faith.
Their temples and monasteries were reduced to  rubble and wholesale massacre took place in Delhi, Nalanda and elsewhere where ancient libraries were put to torch and monks slain.

So religious intolerance is nothing new . It has just become more lethal with the rise of terror groups like ISIS, Al Shabab, Boko Haram, JI, Al Quaeda, Talibans etc. that uses indiscriminate violence to achieve their goal of spreading their brand of violent Islam the like of which has not been  seen since the middle ages. While the religious intolerance was then  a state sponsored activity , it has now been taken over by individual groups that raise funds through extortion, smuggling, sale of drugs made from opium in some countries and many such activities to  further their agenda.
There are some states that also sponsor such activity and openly support terror groups for one reason or other.

The vacuum created by the war and demise of Kaddafi , Saddam Hussain and others in the region has been filled by such terror groups that are taking over a large part of the region where they can set up their so called caliphate and practice their form of intolerant and harsh and violent Islam. Millions of people are now homeless and fleeing their homeland  where they were once prosperous while their homes are being turned into rubble. Europe now has a serious refugee problem that is causing them a lot of headache.

The tragedy is purely man made and innocent people are suffering who do not support such violence and want to live in peace . I have worked in Muslim countries and in some countries like Algeria, I found them no different than the average person anywhere. Some even invited me to their homes during Id festival and others offered food, coffee and shelter from the rain when they saw that I was getting wet riding my bike.

However, the Islamic world is quite divided between the majority Sunnis and the minority Shias not to mention many others sects like the Sufis, Hazaras, Bahais etc. who tend to be moderate in their understanding of the basic tenets of Islam. It is the Sunni majority spearheaded by the Saudis who consider themselves the true believers of Mohammed and who guard two holy sites of Islam such as Mecca and Medina, spread their belief of hardline Islam throughout the world using their oil money and emissaries ,by funding thousands of Islamic schools in many countries where they preach hate and create future Talibans or ISIS or their ardent supporters.

Then there are countries like Pakistan where a strong military and weak elected government and their eternal enmity toward India makes them a hot bed of training ground for terrorists who then go and make mayhem in India or elsewhere with the help of money from the gulf and even the United States.
Remember how Musharraf lied to the US that he did not know where Bin Laden was and he needed more money to fight the Islamists so the US kept giving him billions in arms and other war materials but Bin laden was hiding in plain sight with the knowledge and support of the Pakistan Military and the intelligence .This is just to underscore the duplicity of that country.

The fundamental thing that the civilized world fails to understand about Islam and its practitioners is that Islam recognizes no national or political border that were mostly the creations of colonial period in the middle east and elsewhere and are forcefully maintained even today because it served the interests of the colonials powers then and do so now today. This artificial division of a region by the British and other powers by drawing a line on a map and call it Saudi Arabia, Iraq or Syria has not divided the Sunnis among themselves or the Shias , rather it underscores the basic tenet of Islam that says all Muslims no matter where they live , live by the rules of Islam and not by the rules imposed on them by the governments where they live.

By this argument, it is clear to see the futility of dividing India and Pakistan into two entities because the Muslims living in these countries have more in common with each other than Hindus, Sikhs or Jains and others and will always support each other when push comes to shove as it does in Kashmir. But the British divided India after the war to serve their own interests which was to create problems on both side of India forever so that it ( India) will have to spend immense resources to keep the enemies at bay thereby slowing down the economic and military growth. This also holds true of Pakistan and hurts Pakistan more as it is poorer and has less natural resources than India .

Now let us consider the spread of Islamists in the middle East and elsewhere and see what is happening and most of all why. I agree with the writer that the West has a fundamental misunderstanding of what and whys of the Islamist movement and seems eager to punish them by bombing and giving arms to some groups to fight them in a proxy war. But the bombing has made these people more determined to carry on and it has very limited impact on their governance and mobility. It is true that most Moslems do not support ISIS and only a very small number of terrorists join them but enough in numbers to make ISIS a deadly force to reckon with by any means.

But ISIS is only a manifestation of deeper and fundamental grievance of the Muslim world against the rest who see them as "infidels" who do not believe in the teachings of Mohamed and therefore fair game as per Koran. This feeling of us vs them is more prevalent among the Muslim than what we are told by the media to believe.

Muslims feel alienated from every society they live in because of their beliefs and their readiness to fight for those beliefs in any way they can. Even the so called moderate Muslims will agree that their beliefs in Koran and its teachings are more important to them than participating in the development of democracy, human rights and gender equality to give just a few examples because all these ideas are contrary to their beliefs and therefore have no meaning for them. They are told by the mullahs in every mosque that all Muslims are their brothers no matter where they live and they have a right to practice their faith as written in Koran or as interpreted by the mullahs where the population is mostly illiterate.

This is one basic reason why Muslims fail to integrate with others no matter where they live resulting in more animosity, ghetto living as in Europe or lack of opportunities to earn a decent living due to lack of education, social skills or training that could otherwise earn them gainful employment and make their poor lives more tenable and even more agreeable. But integration has failed in Europe and it fails in America.

By contrast Hindus, Sikhs and others have greater chance of integration in foreign countries because they come equipped with education and skills and less religious baggage than the
Muslim and in general have a higher standard of living .They even intermarry and the next generation of such immigrants then grow up more American, British or European than their parents .

The Muslims all over the world see the Western ideas, values or behavior as exemplified by Madonna or Rihanna or others as fundamentally against what the Koran teaches and agree that Koran spells out in clear language how a woman should dress or behave for example no matter that it was written 1400 years ago when circumstances were radically different than what they are today. It is really no different that the fundamentalist Christians who still insists that all they need to learn is in the Bible so ignore the climate change, existence of other intelligent beings in the universe etc. just because it was not mentioned in the Bible.

It is for example forbidden to earn interest in a Muslim Bank account for a Muslim .It is haram or forbidden but it does not stop the Islamic banks to lend the free money they keep to lend it to non Muslims at high interest rate. By and large all banks do it . They give you pittance for your money you keep with them and deduct hefty income tax on what they give and then loan it to borrowers at 15 to 18 % interest . Muslims do not accept usury and here Jesus agrees with them. There is a 12 year old Canadian girl who is on U tube ( you must watch her) telling how banks in Canada and US rob common people to get super rich and how wall street does it with the full approval of the US government.

Now let us consider what is the future never mind what Nostradamus wrote centuries ago .I will get to that in a minute. The crisis created by a handful of people who call themselves ISIS, Talibans or Al Nusra , Moros or JI (Indonesia) have one thing in common ( Boko Haram, Al Shabab etc. are others). They share a belief that Islam is under threat and it is their duty to protect it from the rest of the world and keep it pure and following only the dictates of Koran. They are willing to use any means including mass killings to achieve their goal of one day making the whole world bow to their demands.

But the rest of the world including many Islamic countries that have made progress in agriculture, infrastructure development, education, human rights, gender equality and universal health coverage and where all people can see and feel the progress their form of democratic government is making (in spite of corruption and low moral as well as ethical values) are not sold on this ISIS inspired Jihad. In fact they are just like any other people who want to live in peace and send their children to good schools where they can learn the essentials to cope with the modern world.

They are Muslims and pray five time every day but they also see values in democracy where everyone no matter how poor has a voice and can bring about changes to make their lives better. This does not happen under Koranic dictatorship so they are well aware and do not support mindless killing in the name of religion.

So now we come to the part of Nostradamus. He has predicted that a rogue nation will rise in the Middle east that will represent the third anti Christ and will acquire weapons of mass destruction to further their ideology namely nuclear weapons and attack Europe and America . This prediction is not as far fetched as it seems. Pakistan has nuclear weapons and threatens India everyday with it but it is quite conceivable that these weapons may fall into the hands of Jihadists who are in the Pakistan army or other outfits and pass them on to this rogue nation that will them use them to advance their agenda.

Remember that Pakistan nuclear scientist Khan admitted that he sold the technology to Iran and tried to sell it to Libya and North Korea in return for huge amount of money so that he could get rich beyond belief but also due to his belief that he was helping the fundamentalists to fight against western corruption of their faith.

If such a future scenario is predicted then the result will also be predictable. The free world will not allow this rogue nation to threaten the whole world and change the world order as it stands now. People will have too much to lose and will protect what they have at any cost so they will unite against this rogue nation and destroy it or make it incapable of further mischief. In this effort India will join hands with US and Europe and other countries will fall behind this joint effort to root out the evil empire that ISIS plans to make. This will lead to the Third World War and it will last scores of years at a tremendous loss of lives on all sides but the joint will of the free world will prevail against evil as it usually does but at a tremendous costs.

I think the good always wins against evil in the long run but this war will devastate certain parts of the world and will bring death and untold misery and grief just like the last war and people everywhere will have to pay a very heavy price to defeat the purveyors of evil in the name of religion.

I hope I am not alive when that happens but I worry about the next generation because they will bear the brunt of it one way or the other.

Consequences of culture clash

Synopsis : When people have a feeling that they belong to a superior culture ,they tend to clash with others who come from other cultures and have their own superior feelings about it. The result is a clash that can be avoided if only people accept that no one culture is better than any other and each culture has something unique that needs to be appreciated.  The culture shock some people suffer is silly and very outdated.

Consequences of culture clash

People always value their own culture as superior to others. It makes them feel good  to  be dismissive about other people who are not like them and not worth any consideration.  You hear jokes about people which is a manifestation of disapproval  because you do not joke about someone for whom you have high regards. In India Sikh are butt of jokes everywhere although most Sikhs take it not seriously and smile but it comes from the belief that some how Sikhs are not to be regarded as intelligent and worth respect. This is blatant prejudice.
They also make fun of south Indians who are considered uncouth in their manners and vulgar in their behavior because they use the whole palm for eating and talk only in their language even if others present do not understand them.

Some Asians do the same and turn their backs to you if you are not one of them and will ignore you because they are very uncomfortable in English. I have found this sort of behavior in many countries even when you speak their language well.

The clash of culture of which the language is a part comes when a person feels superior and condescending to others. People will laugh at your clothes, manners, body language, accent, your grooming like keeping beard, mustache, long hair ,wear turban or other such outer accoutrement. They will laugh at your choice of food, your eating manners, your drinking manners , your posture and in short anything that they don't  approve because they think they are superior in every aspect. This is where culture clash occurs sometimes with tragic consequences.

I come from a traditional Hindu culture where we are taught that our culture is very old and venerable therefore must be superior to others. The caste discrimination is a part of the Hindu culture where people of a certain caste are looked down upon as sub humans and are still treated as such.

A brahmin girl from north India went to bathe in a river in South India but was not allowed to do so by the fanatic Brahmins there who did not believe that she was a brahmin  which is the uppermost caste in the social class in India because she did not wear silk and did not have a diamond nose pin which is the sign of a brahmin there. The river ghats were reserved exclusively for the brahmins there.

A tragic part of this culture is the system of dowry still practiced all over India when a girl gets married. Perhaps it started as a guarantee of financial  well-being for the girl in case she became a widow and had no other means to support her but it degenerated into what dowry is today and is simply a  price the parents of the bride pay to the groom . When the marriage ends up on the rocks, the bride often reminds the husband that he was bought  and has no self-respect.

The dowry deaths are not uncommon. The in-laws torment the girl because she did not bring enough dowry so they want more. Often the greed of the groom is manifested even before the marriage and he or his parents start demanding more money and gifts in order for the marriage to take place. This happens in front of the all the guests . Brave is the girl who walks away before they tie the knot because  of this brazen behavior of the groom or his parents but how many girls are so brave?

But Indians are not ashamed of the dowry system and say that it is an ancient tradition and an integral part of their old and venerable culture so it must be good. Rare is a young man  who dares to challenge his parents on it even if he is well disposed to marry a poor girl.
Young widows  were drugged with opium and burned alive on the funeral pyre of their husbands  in the name of an ancient tradition called suttee until the British banned the practice thus saving many young women’s lives . In Rajasthan young and old women preferred to jump into the fire than to surrender to the enemy when  their men lost the battle  and left their hand prints on stone walls before the self-immolation. Some of the prints found show the hand of a child.
There was a time when people could not afford to travel abroad or even within their own country so did not know much about how other people lived but in the modern age , many people travel to seek jobs abroad or simply  visit other countries . Thus they come across cultures different from their own and often come into conflict. The increase in tourism also brings foreigners to their country who bring with them their culture that may be different.

A peace corps woman  was pinched on her buttocks by Indian men who did not approve  of her very short tight shorts and took such liberty  although the woman was in shock  because she thought nothing of showing off her massive thighs.

This is purely cultural. What passes for normal in one country does not pass at all in other. When people visiting other countries  are insensitive  to local culture, such incidents happen. One Indian girl wearing very tight shorts was sent home by university students who did not approve of her.

In Fareed Zakaria's  Why they hate us  segment in the CNN he digs deeper into the reasons behind this culture clash and give the epic example of how an Egyptian man went to a dance hall in the US  and was scandalized to see women kissing and hugging men in public and rubbing their bodies against men while dancing in close proximity . To him it was so against all that he was ever taught by his religion  that he thought such culture was pure evil that must be opposed and must not be allowed to taint the Moslems anywhere.

He wrote 14 books that were wildly popular in the middle east and gave rise to the Moslem brotherhood that vowed to fight the import of such evil influences  through media, movies and other means that were corrupting the Moslems everywhere specially the women . He was executed in Egypt for encouraging the assassination of Nasser but people called him a hero and a martyr. Later they killed Sadat and came to power in Egypt only to be toppled by the army recently.
Thus encouraged the Moslems brotherhood took over the Mecca Kaba with heavy arms and threatened to kill hostages until sharia laws were enacted everywhere.
To placate them, the Saudi government allowed them to dictate the religious teachings in the kingdom and paid for madrassas all over the world to teach fundamentalism to children who then grew up to join Al Qaeda and Talibans and now  the self-proclaimed “pure Moslems” of the caliphate  of ISIS.

So one can easily see the tragic consequences of the clash of cultures . In  most countries, people are now used to seeing hordes of camera toting tourists of all nationalities  whom they ignore or exploit. I have seen female Australian and American tourists stripping naked in plain view of locals and swim in the rivers in Thailand where the bashful locals just avert their eyes  in shock. This sort of callous disregard for the local culture often leads to misunderstanding  or even arrests by the police . Some outraged citizens may take matters into their own hands  like in Delhi where some Africans were beaten up for playing loud foreign music or for their drunken behaviors   that offended many .

When a female Indian pop artist  staged a concert in the style of Rihanna wearing skimpy clothes, there was a popular  uprising and protest from the traditionalists who saw it as the import of evil western influence to corrupt their children and threw stones and eggs to disrupt the show. There are fanatic Hindu fundamentalists who oppose such culture and routinely  protest sometime violently to disrupt the show be it a concert or a beauty pageant in India.

Western pop artists  have been banned from many countries due to the pressure from the traditionalists who see them as purveyors of western values that clash with their culture although they are popular with the young people who tend to be less concerned about traditions.

But the clash of culture is a lot more than protesting the import of western culture and values. The equality of gender , the freedom of expression, the fair treatment of LGBTQ people,  no job discrimination  based on ethnicity, skin color or the sex of a person, freedom of press to criticize wrong doings of elected officials or ills of the society , religious freedom and tolerance towards others are all parts of the western culture that in some countries are seen as a threat to their own culture and values so they resist.

It is not just about food or dress or manners but a lot more. Indian parents for example are dismayed  when their children  talk back to them or to their teachers and  show disrespect which they see in Hollywood movies frequently. Caning of students to keep them in their places in high schools was a practice not long ago  and is still done in some parts to teach pupils good manners.

But western visitors are shocked to see an Indian man chewing pan and talking to people at the same time, spitting the red juice anywhere and the Indians are shocked to see a man putting up his feet on the desk while receiving someone in his office in America.

On the other hand the American children are always taught by their parents or elders to say thank you when they receive a gift  or say may I or please when they ask for something. Indian parents rarely teach their children such manners so no one says thank you or please. We gave a fellow some gasoline for his scooter in India and were very surprised when he just started the scooter and drove off without even saying thanks. He was a total stranger whom we helped.

When Indians receive a gift, they will not open it in front of you to see what you gave and will try to determine how much it costs later. If it is too costly, they will secretly return it to your bag. If it is what they can afford then they will buy something of equal value to give to you . They do this because they do not like to feel being under your obligation . An American woman whom we invited to our home left some money secretly on the sofa for the same reason. These are all cultural matters that one has to deal with everywhere.

Now a days everybody has a cell phone and they talk loudly in public  while waiting for the airline counter or in a crowded bus or train disturbing everybody. One black woman talked incessantly and loudly on a train in the US for so long that people called the police to take her away screaming insults at all but now you can see this sort of behavior all the time. They annoy you in the movie house  with their cell phones and children behave badly screaming and kicking your chair while you want to enjoy a quiet meal at a restaurant. Their parents do not scold the kids and often can’t control them.

In Africa we saw that any old man could box the ears of any kid thus misbehaving so the kids were afraid and their parents totally approved such spanking by the elders of the village  but try to scold  someone’s kid in America who is not behaving well and the parents will immediately come to his defense.

Often hand gestures mean different things in different countries. You are not supposed to use your left hand in India for anything so you will find very few people who are left-handed because they are discouraged to use the left hand from the childhood. The left hand is considered unclean because people use it to wipe their butt after toilet. This is also true in most of Africa but I was very amused to see Richard Quest of CNN giving the cocoa farmers in the Ivory Coast chocolate with his left hand not realizing that he should have used his right hand.

Another example of cultural gaff I saw in a TV ad was when a young man drinking a glass of whiskey  put his arm around the shoulder of an old man who was also drinking. This was America where old people are not shown the respect they are given in other countries and are called by their first names. Even children call their parents by their first names but in Asia such behavior is not tolerated.

The Confucius teachings tell us that we must show respect to all our elders ,relative or not and calling them by their first name or putting your arms on their shoulder is certainly not part of showing respect. You must not talk in the class room unless the teacher allows you to and must not contradict him or her.

You must show respect to your ancestors by keeping their photos on the family altar like in Vietnam and light some joss sticks everyday. You should call old people  with affectionate names like  papa, mama, uncle or grandpa even if they are not your relatives but the Americans will laugh at this.

I know that I escaped harm by calling the Haitian woman   ma Cherie who then calmed down the mob that had surrounded our car during the violent revolution in Haiti. But calling people affectionately makes them happy so it can not be bad.

But treating women badly if they are seen with a boy friend  in public, forced marriage of children or killing  women who refuse marriage proposals or who do not submit to their cruel husband’s demands who beat them and treat them worse than animal is often excused as part of a tribal culture in some parts of the world and even police does not interfere.

Let us face it. People do a lot of bad and inhuman things like this in the name of culture and tradition .When will it end? Maybe  when someday all boys and girls will have education and grow up like Malala defending their rights with the help of the government , NGOs or educated parents who have suffered in their culture and want to reform it.

Teaching children hate in Saudi sponsored madrassas  or discrimination practiced by Hindus towards the dalits  is not the way forward for the humanity but education and a change of heart to accept what is just, fair and humane  is.

Role of international aid in development

Synopsis : The role of international aid in the development of other countries has increasingly come into debate and soul-searching. Often such aid is hampered by the corrupt politicians and mismanagement so the emphasis of this blog is to be self-reliant and seek aid only when new methods and technologies are needed .

Role of international aid in development

This is a topic that evokes strong reaction from certain quarters as people tend to get very patriotic when it comes to evaluating how much their countries are helping others. However, as an impartial observer I do have a few things to say about how some countries play their aid card to further their own interests and try to make recipient countries feel a sense of gratitude.

The prime culprit in this game of aid to serve its own interest is the United States of America with its vaunted USAID program with a symbol of clasping a black hand and using this sticker on anything they ever pay for.

Richard Nixon once infamously said “the United States does not give aid to other countries to help them but rather it gives aid to help itself”. If we analyse this statement further ,we come to find the truth behind it. One USAID employee in Haiti glibly said to me that for every aid dollar the US spends on foreign aid, more than 67 cents go back to the US. This is not a joke but straight from the horse’s mouth. There is a law passed by the congress that says that all the equipment needed for any project overseas must be bought in the US be it a vehicle or a paper clip. The exceptions are few and hard-fought for.

The American Jeep dealer in Port Au Prince was a real rascal and supplied poorly built jeeps with city tires that kept falling apart within the year and needed constant welding and fixing but he made a fortune being the sole dealer of jeeps. When asked why he sold jeeps with city tires when the vehicles needed all terrain tires, he said it was not his fault. No one at the AID office told him about the all terrain tires so he did it cheaply and made more profit. The AID people are not field people and rarely go out of their air-conditioned offices so I believe they did not know how bad the roads in rural Haiti were.

So very few cents to a dollar for the project itself remained in country to spend locally less the ever-present corruption in recipient countries that siphoned off more of the remaining cents leaving only a pittance to run the project. The whole bureaucracy of AID that oversees the multi billion dollar aid program overseas is run from it’s Washington HQ where pencil pushing officers talk whole day of nothing but PIL ( project implementation letter) and such to demonstrate how important a work they are doing and how they are helping the poor Haitians or Afghanis who are so grateful for this aid.

Then they insist that US experts should be invited to the project site to give them advice on what to do and how to do it .These “experts” are then paid a hefty fee,air fare plus per diem that of course comes out of the project budget because these funds are earmarked for such “help” . One such expert wanted to come to Haiti and build a solar cooker when I asked for help in building a rice grain blower and sent him the blue print to do it. He said that such a complicated machine can not be built-in Haiti which is a very poor country and does not have the facility or workshop to do it so he will build a solar cooker instead. Our project was an agricultural project to help rice farmers and it did not need a solar cooker so I put my foot down and refused to authorize this expert to come .

This raised some eyebrows and the expert was mad as a hatter . Who was this third world agronomist to stop him? Wasn’t it an American funded project? By the way ,there was a modern workshop in Les Cayes where all tools were available to build the machine but the idiot had never even seen a hand operated grain blower let alone know what it was supposed to do. I suppose he had never heard of IRRI either.

Then there was another expert who showed up with a small vacuum cleaner to catch mosquitoes to see if they were the biting type. This was an agriculture project which had nothing to do with mosquitoes so who invited him and paid for him?

On top of that came a horde of congressmen and other VIPs from Washington on “fact finding missions” but never mentioned what facts they were able to find. One of them took over my living room to make a political speech to a quickly gathered crowd of yokels who did not understand English. This congressman probably thought that he was a snake oil peddler and needed an apple crate to stand on.

We said no to any future clown who wanted to do the same again raising some eyebrows at the US embassy. Wasn’t I a third world agronomist who should have been grateful for the employment in an US funded project? You can draw your own conclusions but the fact is that I have met many such people who pretended to help the poor countries but actually did nothing of the sort.

The head of the USAID program in Washington once started talking to me in a very condescending manner and said that it was good that I was teaching those poor ignorant farmers in Vietnam new methods and techniques in agriculture. When I said that they were not ignorant and knew agriculture better than anyone , he did not like my response and terminated the meeting. This culture of condescension prevails throughout the system and is widely resented by recipient countries.

There are a huge number of organisations that have their offices around Washington ,DC. and are called beltway bandits because they are after the piece of the American Aid pie. Their sole purpose of existence is to frequent the AID office to find out what new offers are in the offing, what kind of project proposals are needed to bid for the contract, how much money is earmarked for the project and what is the deadline for submission of the bids. Then they get to work.

They hire the “experts” who are dime a dozen in the US or elsewhere and these experts after a cursory visit to the project site and country, write voluminous reports called project proposal that details the personnel, equipment, cost and other sundry items and with this in hand the bandits then bid for the project. If they get the project , it means a land fall profit for them because the lion’s share of the budget for the project goes for the overhead expense for them in DC,the experts plus the mandatory purchase of equipment etc. which is part of the 67 cents to the dollar that must be sent back.

A friend of mine once told me how these experts always carried their laptops with them and could be seen furiously typing away while on a plane or in the airport waiting lounges. Report writing has never been easier these days thanks to Google . You can get any amount of information in the internet but their report would usually start with a paragraph like “ In a very poor land locked country of Afghanistan where people live on less than a dollar a day” etc. Copy and paste feature is made for these “experts”.

I have mentioned here the USAID but may countries have similar modus operandi and have even stricter rules on how to spend the project money, who gets to spend it and how much of it must go back to the donor. They insist that the project manager must be an American if the funding is from America or European if the funds come from Europe. They do not trust a third country national with their money but once in a while they hire someone like me who can then be a thorn on their side.

There are however some surprises once in a while. There are some ex Peace Corps people who join the AID and bring with them their extensive field experiences. They understand the poor countries better because of their first hand living experience there and know what it takes to make a project successful so they push hard within their system to give a person like me a helping hand as they did in Haiti. But they are few in number and are often overlooked.

Now let us analyse the impact of the aid policies on the recipient countries. I have sat through many meetings between the donors and the recipients as a facilitator or sometimes as a translator and got to know the real feelings of the receivers of aid. Often they flatly refused to abide by the strict rules they must accept before the project agreement is signed because they want to be free to decide how the money is spent ,where it is spent and how much must remain in the hands of the recipient country.

Often such meetings ended up in a failure to come to an agreement and the visitors were sent back to the airport after a meal in a restaurant where the waiters were told by the host to send them the bill later and they disappeared . The visitors morosely ate their meal alone and went back to the airport to write their report .They always carried their laptops.

I have often felt a strong sense of resentment the poorer countries feel that is growing toward the donor countries that impose so strict rules and lay the ground work for mistrust that works like termites eating away at the foundation.

The donors will do anything to get a project going somewhere and will invite the minister or head of a department to Washington or Brussels all expenses paid to
make them agree on a project because it is a lot easier to do it in DC or in Brussels than in Bamako or Niamey but some times it back fires.

I have been told again and again that the donors must not underestimate the capability of the locals to run a project because they can often do it a lot cheaper and more efficiently than the foreigners. They too have many highly educated people with Ph.Ds who are smart and can be project managers and they should be given full authority on how to run a project , hire people and should have full participation in writing the project proposal that is suitable to their needs. Instead of a top down approach ,it should be a bottom up approach so that the project helps the poor in a solid well-managed way.

They scoff at the experts who take a great deal of money to tell them what they already know and feel that such a waste of money should be stopped. They want the staff to be better trained so they want them to be sent to international research centers or other such places but such demands are often not met. I was invited to a conference in Tanzania when I was working in Mali but the Canadian employer refused to sponsor it giving no reasons. I was entitled as an international staff to participate in international meetings .

There are many such issue that plague international development that need discussion at the highest level. I often dealt with callous program officers who were outright ignorant about the local culture and treated people badly creating ill feelings all around. One such fellow went to a remote village in Mali and asked villagers what their problems were so the villagers very eagerly gave him a long list of their problems thinking the “blanc” will do something about it. But the “blanc” was just making cheap talk not realizing that he was raising the expectations of these poor villagers.

So from my experience I know that the real development can only come when donors and recipients can sit down and thresh out all the issues that divide them and do it openly with the aim to help the poor in a concrete and measurable way. People give money but they always want something in return so the aids are always with strings attached. It is important for the poor countries to know what those strings are and whether or not they agree to the terms that are often dictated by the donor’s home offices.

There is a classic example of waste of aid money in Afghanistan where a multi million dollar gas station was built where practically no one had a car or a school where there were no teachers and the Talibans threatened any one attending such schools. The gas station or school could be built by the locals at the fraction of the cost but the contract was given to Americans. This sort of thing goes on everywhere . No one goes back to check a few years later if the gas station is still in use or the school has trained teachers and students attending there.

The money spent by the AID for  the irrigation canal in Haiti is another example of waste where the contractor stole money from the project and built canals with less cement and more sand resulting in crumbling canals that brought water no where. At first the more powerful farmers who were also a part of the militia called ton ton macoute in Haiti took most of the water up-stream for themselves leaving very little for the farmers down streams . This caused many conflicts and even deaths.

There is a real need of development be it in agriculture, education or infrastructure development or health care. The national governments always struggle to meet these demands because they do not have the resources or due to widespread corruption that exists at every level that siphons money away from the projects. The government officials elected or not tend to fill their pockets first and give only lip service to developing their country.

As I have written earlier, there is no end to corruption anywhere. It exists everywhere .Only the degree varies from country to country. There is corruption whenever money is spent for anything anywhere so that is a fact of life. The idea is to find a solution that can channel most of the aid money to those who need them most but a country never develops with foreign aid. The poor remain poor and some people get very rich stealing the aid money. Such countries remain aid dependent and can not bring development to where it is needed. The real development has to come from within the country and for that to happen ,you need a responsive elected government that thinks first of it’s people.

But that is a very tall order anywhere.
