Intolerance

Synopsis : The scourge of radicalism in any religion is a cause for distress and suffering. The idea that one must bow to a religion and be forcibly converted is an outdated one in the modern world although the terrorists say that they are right and the whole world that repudiates them is wrong. The blog looks at the reasons for the intolerance of other faiths as practiced by some who resort to violence to push their agenda and suggests that basically we are all brothers and sisters  who must learn to live in peace and harmony in spite of our ethnic, religious and racial differences.

I have written a great deal about the cultural diversity that enriches  any country and have written about the unity in diversity as well. Citizens of any country no matter what their cultural identity may be , their language or religion owe their allegiance to their country and generally speaking obey the laws of their country.

In a free democratic society there is or should be room for anyone who is fundamentally different from you because of their right to practice their religion  and wear their ethnic dress  or speak their own language and observe the rules as practiced by their religions without offending anyone who is different from them. In many democratic countries , their constitution allows for such freedom so we see that a large number of Amish people took refuge in the United States because they were persecuted in their home countries in Europe by others who did not agree with their faith and life style.

America has given the opportunity to live freely so many different groups of various religions and cultures took the offer and emigrated to the United States. There are ethnic Lao people who were uprooted from their villages in Vietnam and Laos due to the war and constant threat to them  not to mention hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese people who chose America as their home due to the war in Vietnam. There are people from numerous countries who now call America their home so it is truly a land of immigrants. You will see very ornate Hindu temples as well as big mosques, Jewish synagogues and churches so people of all religions live in harmony and peace.

In Europe we see the influx of refugees from Africa and the Middle eastern countries due to war there so many countries in Europe have taken in the asylum seekers who have settled themselves somewhere without making an effort to assimilate into the European societies where they  now live. The Algerians migrated to France in large numbers before and after their independence from France because they were poor  and sought jobs in the factories in France that needed cheap labor. They still remain apart from the others because they try to maintain their cultural and religious identity. This tendency to remain apart from others to protect their cultural, ethnic and religious identity leads to barriers that isolate them from the mainstream culture of the country where they live. This isolation generates mistrust and intolerance that has social consequences.

So today I want to write about a loaded word called intolerance and will try to look into the deeper meaning of this word that is now in vogue almost everywhere. I have written in the past that the intolerance of others who are different from us is basically rooted in ignorance that breeds prejudice based on false assumptions about them. This ignorance makes people afraid of people who are not like them and who practice a set of beliefs that are different. I see that most people are unable or unwilling to accept that all religions are basically the same although their rituals and methods of reaching spirituality may be different than yours.

I was amused that people in the United States were asking google what is Taj Mahal and where in the world it is located specially after the state visit of the US president Trump and his family to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. I was amused because I thought everyone knew where was Taj Mahal located because it is the seventh wonder of the world like the Pyramids of Giza or the Wall of China but obviously most Americans had never even heard of Taj Mahal until their president posed for a photo in front of it yesterday.

A small number of Americans who have visited India may have seen the Taj Mahal and other places of interest but this knowledge remains limited to a very few people .The rest remain ignorant because they do not travel  so remain uninterested in knowing the world. This isolation has many reasons none of which are worth writing about here but the isolation remains a reason for their ignorance about other countries and other people , their culture and their history.

I often find the news media in the western countries complicit  that spread negative news about other countries , their people, their beliefs and culture giving the people the impression that the so called third world countries are not worth their attention because they are poor, have strange religions they do not understand or care about , where cows and snakes are found everywhere, where people wear strange clothes etc.
Among the third world countries also there is tremendous ignorance about other countries like India so they are very surprised to know that India now is a world power, a technically advanced country that sends Moon lander or a rover that lands on Mars. In the Philippines some people may have heard of Touch Mahal although I have corrected many to say Taj Mahal but they can't be corrected.

So I come back to the point that ignorance breeds prejudices that lead to intolerance. Recently the Indian government enacted a law that gives the persecuted minorities living in strict Islamic countries the right to get the Indian citizenship so that they now have a chance to live in India freely anywhere and enjoy all the rights, privileges and practice their religion freely. It is like a homeland for Jews in Israel where any Jew anywhere may be given citizenship and the freedom to live the way they want free of pogrom and persecution. It was the reason for creating Israel. All people want a homeland where they can feel free to practice their faith and live peacefully but many are denied so the Palestinians are still waiting and so are the Kurds, the Yezidis, the Coptic Christians etc.

Hindus are persecuted in some Islamic countries where they force them to convert to Islam, where they suffer great deprivation, poverty and the status of second class citizens, where their women are abducted and forcibly made Muslim, where they do not have any rights that the Hindus in India enjoy so now they want to move to India. Similarly the Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains and the Zoroastrians will now get to live freely in India just like anyone else. This is a boon to all the persecuted people so this humanitarian law in India should be praised but some people think differently.

It did not sit well with the Mullahs who insist that the Muslims from other countries like the Bangladesh, the Rohingyas of Burma and other countries must also be given Indian citizenship that the law does not allow so they have incited the Muslims in India to take to the streets and have resorted to violence. They have burned buses, torched many Hindu homes and pelted stones at the policemen killing some of them. They have looted Hindu shops and burned them to ashes all because of this law that gives shelter to the persecuted people.

The Indian Government wants all illegal immigrants to leave India and has started the process of identifying them and sending them to where they came from. Many countries have similar laws that deport illegal immigrants and insist that all immigrants must follow the legal immigration procedures so India now has started to follow the same but the Muslims in India are openly defying the law and have taken to the streets and violent protests. This has led to the confrontation between those who support the humanitarian law and those who oppose it causing widespread mayhem and even deaths and that too during the state visit of a sitting US president to the country.

By and large people of various religions live side by side in India but the fundamentalist Muslims now threaten the country and cause mayhem because they are intolerant of people of other faiths namely the Hindus who are the majority. Their Mollahs make fiery speeches and exhort the uneducated Muslims  to demonstrate violently in many parts of the country that has led the Government to intervene and use force to disperse the crowd. The Indian government has repeatedly explained that the Muslims of India are citizens of India so they should not worry about anything but it has had little effect on the people demonstrating violently in the streets of Delhi.

I have traveled to many countries including Islamic countries but I have never seen any animosity there towards the Hindus. I was very well received in Algeria and Egypt and I had a room mate in Tizi Ouzou in Algeria who was a Muslim from Tunisia and a very nice fellow. I have been invited by my Muslim office mates in Mostaganem to their homes in a village to celebrate Id ul Fitr and was very well received. But in India this intolerance towards non Muslims is like a living snake that can strike you without warning or under any pretext. There have been mass massacres of Hindus in India by the Muslims during the partition of India in 1947 so the seed of intolerance took root since then. As I said earlier, this intolerance between two religions is not as widespread as the Muslims make out to be but it takes very little to rouse them to violence so the riots start on a short notice. Muslims and Hindus coexist but rarely they mix with each other.

The Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians all fought together in the Indian National Army of Bose to defeat the British and make them leave India so many Muslims died fighting for the freedom of India because Bose never differentiated between anyone because of religion. Muslims adored Bose and his dynamic leadership because Bose told them that they were all Indians first so must fight together to free India.

So why the poison of intolerance was injected to separate people and by whom? To learn the source of intolerance we have to go back to the pre independence days of 1946 when a fierce separatist called Jinnah demanded a country for Muslims creating Pakistan that caused the loss of over a million lives during the process of vivisection of India while the British just looked on and did nothing to prevent it.

In fact they were complicit in cutting up India into three parts because they did not want to see a undivided India living in peace and harmony and become a world power someday. They could not accept that Bose and his army had sown fear in their hearts that made them leave. They were a proud people who had just defeated Hitler but governing a seething country like India was beyond their ability in 1947 but the world was told a different story of how Gandhi and his cohorts got India free . Nothing could be farther  from the truth.

When the Pakistan soldiers invaded part of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 and occupied a large portion of it, the British Governor General Mountbatten just looked on and did nothing to stop them. Now both India and Pakistan are inching toward another military confrontation over the occupied portion of Kashmir and soon this may lead to a military solution in favor of India because America and many other powerful countries support India in its dispute with Pakistan. They are also arming India to its teeth and making huge amount of money in the process.

The seed of intolerance was not an invention of Jinnah but it goes back to some 800 years of Muslim invasion , loot and massacres of innocent people. The Muslim hordes of looters came to India through the Khybar pass in Afghanistan again and again to kill , loot and convert Hindus to Islam by force that their successors like the Mughals continued during the rule of Babur and Aurangjeb. The last Mughal king was Bahadur Shah Zafar who was a pacifist. He was overthrown by the British who sent him to exile in Rangoon, Burma where he died.

The religious extremism had started long before the Mughals when Bakhtiyar Khilji attacked the Nalanda University in Bihar that he razed to the ground, killed all the peaceful teachers and students and burned its massive library to ashes just because they were Buddhists who meant no harm to anyone. This was in 1193.

Mahmud of Ghazni

In 1024, during the reign of Bhima I, the prominent Turkic Muslim ruler Mahmud of Ghazni raided Gujarat, plundering the Somnath temple and breaking its jyotirlinga despite pleas by Brahmins not to break it. He took away a booty of 20 million dinars. He returned to loot the temple 17 times and totally destroyed the temple sacred to all Hindus.  The loot and massacres that followed each raid is well recorded in the annals of history for its cruelty and utter barbarism.

The radical Islam that wants to turn the whole world into their brand of Islamic States is as old as the religion itself that has created 56 Islamic countries so far where non Muslims may not live and they still have 140 or so more to go but they say that the time is on their side so eventually someday they will succeed or that is what they think. Now they are openly calling for the establishment of an Islamic India and are willing to shed blood to do it just like their ancestors. The tragedy is that all the Muslims in India were forcibly converted from Hinduism so basically they are the same people and of the same blood. Just check their DNA.

But the radical Islam is repudiated by the whole world now and the most violent of them all called the ISIS has been decimated and their leader killed recently while they thrive in other parts of the world that is causing bloodshed and destruction on a massive scale. Donald Trump made it very clear during his speech in Ahmedabad a few days ago that America and India will fight together this scourge of radical Islam so that there is peace between people.

The world today is a very different place from what it used to be 1400 years ago. The religion itself has seen better days in many countries where churches remain empty and few people really practice their faith. Most Muslims have nothing to do with the radicals who use terror as means to push their agenda but all it takes is a small group of people to make trouble. The violent form of Islamic radicalism has hurt more Muslims than anyone else. Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Somalia are just a few examples.

Now many countries are coming down hard on any form of radicalism and impose outright ban on them but terrorism continues in many parts. The threat of terrorism caused by radical Islam and its severe consequences can't be ignored after what happened in New York, Mumbai or in Europe.  Now you can not travel to any country without body scan , luggage scan , patting and groping in airports. Even a simple beard and a turban or long gown makes people nervous.

Can I now ask a simple question ?  Can I ask how this poisonous seed of intolerance of other faith can be crushed and destroyed ? I think the answer lies within each of us. We have to examine our conscience and see the injustice of it all and react to it by saying that  Buddha and Jesus were right that we are all brothers and sisters no matter where we come from. Swami Vivekananda said the same thing in Chicago meeting in 1893 winning the hearts of all Americans. We should be humanist first and Muslims, Hindus , Sikhs and Christians later so that we can all learn to live together in peace and harmony because our world is the only one we have so we should leave it for the future of mankind. We must not allow radicalism in any religion to dictate to the world  how we should live. I think all the peaceful people in this world will agree with me.We simply can't afford a third world war caused by intolerance.

Diversity should be welcome

Cultural diversity

Source : Google photo of cultural diversity in India

Synopsis: We now live in the modern world that has shrunk due to the technology, ease of travel and instant communication that has made many countries culturally rich that have taken in new immigrants from other countries who are different. People migrate for various reasons and take up residence in other parts of the world where they flourish if there is the freedom to live the way they have always lived back home. This brings in the diversity that the countries benefit from so it should be welcome.

I have seen how people are forced to become like others in many countries. This is done through overt and covert ways to force people to become homogenized through the process of pressure to assimilate. It starts at the kinder garten level where all children are taught to behave in a certain way, recite the same nursery rhymes, recite the pledge of allegiance every morning without knowing what it means and teaching them selected and biased history of their country.

It does not stop there. The pressure on them grows to belong to the same brand of religion, same ideology and the same style of clothing. Any time some one speaks with an accent different from others, they are scrutinized. If some one wears clothes that are different from others, they are ridiculed or worse beaten up because such people do not believe in diversity. At the root of this behavior lies the ignorance of other cultures, languages, other beliefs and other way of doing things. From this ignorance comes the idea of denigrating others who are not like them.

While it may be good to have one nation under one law where it is applied to all equally, it is always worth considering the fact that there is a great diversity among people coming from different countries, different cultures, different set of beliefs and different ways of doing things that should be appreciated and not suppressed. Each culture has something unique to it that should be seen in its proper light because we grow richer if we care to learn about others who are very different from us.

So the question to ask here is why we do not appreciate others who are different and why we feel threatened by them and in what way? Why do we feel the necessity to homogenize people so that every one looks the same, wears the same clothes and cracks the same jokes? Why do we feel the necessity to belong to the same set of beliefs and ideology, same religion and same everything?

To find the answers to these very basic questions, we must seek it within each one of us. I think this has something to do with the fear of the unknown that gives rise to the assumption that people who are not like us are not to be trusted so they must be either assimilated to be like us or be pressured to leave and go somewhere else. This is the overt expression of homophobia that many countries suffer from even today and is getting worse.

The dictators find it easier to control the population if everybody is the same so the Chinese government insisted to have one form of Chinese language as the national language and discouraged all other forms . While it was good to have a common language all could understand, it undermined all other languages in China that were used for thousands of years but now face extinction due to this pressure.

If you visit the United States where there is no official language but English is assumed to be their language, you will notice that very few people learn other languages in school or college although there are a very large number of people who speak Spanish there. There is absolutely nothing wrong to learn other languages that make you understand their culture and history better but the pressure is on everyone to speak only English.

Here in the Philippines there is pressure to belong to Christian faith so other faiths are ignored or even disapproved. Many schools will not admit a child unless he or she is a Christian and where Bible study and wearing religious medals is mandatory to show your zeal for the religion. The government meetings and even a barrio meetings always start with religious prayers where some people act like zealots. If there are Muslims , Buddhists or Hindus, they are at best tolerated but never assimilated because they are so different. They take the homogeneity to a level so formidable through this pressure that people have become so similar to each other leaving little room for their individuality.

This is done through massive brainwashing that teaches you to be like others. There are numerous TV religious channels that spread this message day in and day out that try to hammer in the religion into everyone from their childhood. I suspect that there are commercial motives as well because a good Christian gives money to the church and even properties that make the churches rich. They send Christian missionaries to other countries to spread the faith and make them "civilized" .

If we visit the Middle Eastern countries where people are Muslims, you will notice how strong this pressure is to conform to their brand of religion be they Sunnis or Shias. They look down on Sufis, Hazaras, Bahai, Ahmadias ,the moderate and liberal Muslims and the the minorities  whom they try to force to convert or discriminate socially. It is very difficult for the minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh to live a normal life like anyone else due to this discrimination. This has led to severe persecution so many have fled and sought sanctuary in other countries.

The countries where people appreciate diversity prosper because they become culturally diverse and richer. They become more tolerant of each other by learning about each other and promoting social harmony.  I visited Egypt recently where I found the Egyptians so friendly and welcoming that made our visit very joyful. They never asked me about my faith and gave me hugs. Beautiful Egyptian girls gave me directions to reach Luxor in fluent English and not hiding under black veils that you see in other countries. Our manager of the hotel in Cairo was  so nice that was unbelievable. The Coptic Christians live in Egypt and are proud to be Egyptians although some fundamentalist Muslims see them as very different and try to persecute them. But over the centuries the Coptic people have prevailed and brought wonderful diversity to Egypt.

The process of assimilation into any society starts with workplace and where people live, where they send their children to school and how others accept the new immigrants. It is normal for the immigrants of a particular country to seek his compatriots in a foreign country for comfort, food , language and social support so we see the Filipinos in the United  States who tend to live in Filipino communities , shopping in stores owned by the Filipinos and eating in Filipino eateries . This is also true of other immigrants who come from other countries because they find their adopted country different from where they come from so seek comfort with their own people making their assimilation harder.

Off the boat people are perhaps the hardest to assimilate into their adopted country at first but the second or the third generation born in their new country find it easier to blend in although there is still the suspicion due to their looks, religion or other things that set them apart from the rest. The lingering fear of discrimination based on their culture, ethnicity and religion is prevalent in many countries making total assimilation a very daunting task for them.

But if you look at the immigrants from many countries who find a new home in other countries , you will also notice the rich culture , the food and the skills they bring with them to make wonderful contribution to their adopted country. The Indian doctors, professors, scientists, IT experts and entrepreneurs in the United States , England, Australia, Canada and many other countries have distinguished themselves in their field of expertise and have settled down there without totally giving up their culture, food and the language.

There was a time in the past during the colonial period where the colonial masters took the indentured laborers from India to Fiji, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and other colonies to run their plantations cheaply . They were uneducated people who were uprooted from their homeland and sent to foreign countries so they settled down in their new homes and have stayed there just like the Japanese , Chinese and the Filipinos who stayed in Hawaii and other states of the United States.

When the colonial era ended and the colonies became free, the export of indentured laborers stopped and the educated and skilled people started the migration that has slowed down but not stopped altogether. Now the diaspora of educated and skilled people from many countries has grown to millions bringing with them new skills, technology and resources enriching their adopted countries where such skills are sorely needed.

There are thousands of doctors, med techs and nurses of Asian origin who have made England their home and are noted for their education and skills. There are accountants, scientists, writers, business people and artists of other countries who have chosen to live in England contributing greatly to the economy there. This diversity is very visible there that disturbs some natives who see them as cultural invaders and resist their assimilation although this process is unstoppable and should be seen as a positive thing.

India is known for its rich diversity where all sorts of people live mostly peacefully although there are some who remain or want to remain separate from others to protect their cultural and religious identity. I see nothing wrong in remaining faithful to one's cultural and religious identity and still be able to live with others who are different .This diversity brings with it its charm and benefits that makes the country so interesting. It would be boring if all Indians looked the same  and lost their regional differences.

In a multicultural society ,the country benefits from this diversity where people of different faith and background learn to live together and even intermarry to some extent. In the struggle for independence in India ,people of different religions , traditions and culture joined the Indian National Army (INA) of Netaji Bose to fight the British and eventually succeeded in ousting them although the credit was given to Gandhi and the Congress party. Thus the history was written by them downgrading the contribution and achievement of the INA of Bose but eventually people have come to know the truth today. It took a great leader like Bose to bring together a diverse group of people to fight the British together because after all they were all Indians first.

Today the world is very different from what it was centuries ago thanks to massive migration of people from one continent to others. People migrate due to economic hardship in their own country caused by natural disasters like the Ireland potato famine, war and oppression to other countries where they start a new life . Others migrate due to religious and political persecution so they seek other countries where they can live without fear and prosper. This movement of people to other countries is an ongoing process that makes the diversity possible in their adopted country.

So I am in favor of diversity as long as one group of people does not start to feel superior to others and tries to introduce religion and language as  means to homogenize people. That is where the trouble starts and creates animosity between them. As long as people remain tolerant to others and their way of life and culture, the diversity is good for any country because it benefits everybody. You can't go wrong embracing diversity. Please also read my earlier blog called Unity in diversity  in this context.

Why are we so lonely ?

Lonely people

Source : Google photo of lonely people

Synopsis : Loneliness is not reserved just for the old age. It may affect anyone in any age group for various reasons. We now live in the age of competition and stress, fast life and fast food . No one really has any time for you because each person is struggling with  his own struggle of life and has numerous issues to deal with. It leaves many people who are introverts or shy and live in isolation that may make them feel lonely. The blog looks at how you can learn to cope with loneliness by reaching out to people who are like-minded. Loneliness should not be confused with mental depression that some people suffer from.

I often think about this topic but always hesitated to write about it because it is a sensitive topic for many people who are lonely but do not like to admit it due to pride or for other social reasons. The loneliness is spreading all over the world like a virus that has no easy cure so people do not know how to fight it. It may have devastating psychological, mental and physical effect on a person but now some scientific studies show what actually happens in your body when you are lonely.

Watch this video that explains why we are so lonely

We are told that humans are social animals . We love to mix with others, spend time with them, share a cup of tea with them and listen to music together. We invite people to our home and cook special food for them, we watch favorite TV shows together or just have a beer together. This social connection create bonds over shared values, interests and topics of discussion. It creates friendship that may last a life time.

In the distant past, people lived together in small communities with a shared courtyard where people sat together to have a smoke or drink tea and exchange news while women washed their clothes or drew water from a common well. Children played in the common courtyard where the adults kept an eye on them.

The dogs sat near them wagging their tails in hope for some tidbits from them but also kept a watch and barked at intruders they were not familiar with while chickens and ducks scratched the dirt hoping to find some thing to eat. The yard was shaded by fruit trees under which people sat and talked about weather or their hopes and aspirations. The farmers talked about the delayed rain or the price of seeds and fertilizer. They talked about the price of their farm produce and need to get farm loans to pay for the irrigation or labor.

Mostly they asked each other about their health and were quick to offer home remedies for anything or everything.  They exchanged gossip about the local news or national news. They greeted each other on their birthdays and always gave their shoulder to the bier to carry their dead friends to their last place of repose and mourned them collectively. They collected money to pay for the expenses.

So living in a community with close contact with each other gave them assurance in case of need which gave them comfort to know that they could count on their neighbors. They invited each other during festivals, marriage, special occasions like naming ceremony or when their children passed tough exams so they celebrated together.

Here I am trying to paint a picture that has started to fade in the modern world where people no longer live the way they used to  so now they  live isolated lives in apartments or tenement buildings that are huge, ugly and uninviting. They do not know their neighbors although they know that they exist because the noise they make that can be heard through their thin walls that separate them creating animosity.

Their wives and children also feel isolated because the nearest park may be quite far and they may have to cross busy roads to get there which may be quite dangerous. There is no longer a common courtyard and a well where they meet other housewives so they have washing machines and dryers. They buy their one or two kids a lot of toys, cell phones and video games but the kids have no playmates. They watch endless TV cartoons and violent movies munching junk food that makes them obese and introverts.

If you live in any city anywhere, you probably live in such an apartment that you may own or rent and move to suburbia if you can afford a house there that has to be paid for in  20 to 30 years to do it. The suburbia living does not really change the isolation because people living there are too busy to earn a living so they leave early in the morning and come home very late depending on the commute they have to make to their place of working. The weekends are reserved for some football game or church so they remain unaware of others in the community where they live.

The modern living that most countries imitate from the western world has given rise to this isolation so people become mean and self centered and will ask you bluntly what do you want if you drop by their gate to say hello neighbor. They are wary of door to door sales people because some of them are into fraud of all sorts and try to target you so you ask what they really want. There is less tolerance towards each other in a modern community that is causing isolation and loneliness because the isolation is self imposed and enduring.

Have you ever sat next to old women in a plane , a bus or train and listened to their endless chatter? They will pull out photos of their endless children and grandchildren and tell you their life story even if you are a total stranger and not really interested to know about them but you keep quiet out of politeness. It is because they are lonely and need someone to talk to who will listen to their monologues.

Some people join some groups that may be religious or non religious just so that they can get out of their joyless homes where they just watch TV or wait endlessly for someone to call or show up at their doors but all they get is robocalls that are a real nuisance or the postman once in a while who drops a lot of junk mail at your door and no real letters from your loved ones. But these groups demand a price from you particularly if it is a religious group . They may  ask you to bake the pumpkin pies or set up a session of catechism at your home or other favors like spreading their brand of fanaticism.

In the United States , there are now some groups where elderly and very lonely people may join just so that they can talk to someone over a glass of beer so that is a change but in many countries there are millions of old people  who live alone after their children have left and the spouse is dead.

In India the old parents live in their own homes usually with their son and daughter in law but such company often means trouble for the olds if the daughter in law is insensitive, careless and quarrelsome who has no love for the old people so they live unhappily. Those who can afford live in old age homes that are now sprouting like mushrooms everywhere but they are expensive because they provide nice rooms, good food and medical care and run  as a profitable business but they do provide the company of other old people who live there.

But for the vast majority of old people who can't afford pricey old age homes have no choice but to  live in isolation in their home or in apartments. By comparison the rural people fare much better where there is still a sense of community and where people know each other but the rural folks face other problems like who will look after their farm or the poultry since the tendency is for the young people to move to cities where they find jobs and visit their rural homes may be once a year.

The community living I described earlier has almost disappeared in cities due to the way the apartments are built where they try to pack in as many tenants as possible in their pigeon holes to maximize the profit but close quarter living creates tension and unhappiness due to this isolation. People need others but they also need space for themselves so old style of houses with a common courtyard are no longer seen anywhere.  Read my blog here called Soulless development here in this context.

In Africa where I have lived and worked for a while, I noticed that the rural folks are noticeably happier than their city counter parts because the community I wrote about earlier still exists while the same people moving to cities live in isolation. The African villages have their elected village chief who sorts out issues between the villagers that may be related to land or cattle or neighbor issues so peace prevails. The fact that they all know each other and belong to the same set of beliefs that makes them live in harmony while the city people are an amalgam of all sorts of  people who may be of different faith, different ethnicity and different tribes.

I  have seen the Amish people in Pennsylvania living in rural areas where they live the way they have always lived. They are close knit communities where their community leaders are always ready help if a neighbor needs help. They help build their barns or do other such things jointly and without charge which is hard to believe in today's world. Read my blog on the Amish people called The admirable Amish here . Their children have very good values and are well mannered. I have explained what I admire in Amish people in it. I wish all people lived like the Amish. I have also written a blog called You can be lonely in a crowd that relates to this topic in many ways so take a look there.

I have always believed in preserving our own individuality , our own values and our own personality so it is never a good idea to give it up just to be accepted by a group where their values and faiths may be different than yours and you will be subject to their pressure to be like them.  An intellectual, writer, poet , an artist or a math professor may feel completely out of place if the others are just vulgar beer drinking farmers who enjoy barn yard jokes and who are dumb as a door nail. So everyone seeks the company of like minded people to spend some time with.

To be alone does not mean that you have to suffer loneliness because being alone can make you strong and resourceful. Some writers have done their best work in isolation where no one disturbs them with their cheap talk.

The shallow people who are ignorant to boot about anything that matters in life resort to cheap talk because they have nothing else in their brain. You will know them instantly when they start talking. People who are not educated, who have never traveled, who have never eaten anything other than their bland food tend to be very loud, opinionated, and rabid fundamentalists. They may know a thousand jokes about the barn yard animals but they do not know anything about the world, other people, their culture, their history and their food. If you are the intellectual type then you will find their company utterly boring because they are at a level far below you so you can't connect to them on anything. If beer drinking and dirty jokes are your interest then may be.

I knew of an educated and very cultured French lady who had lived in Africa for many years who went back to a small village in France to live and found that all they talked about was their pigs and chicken so she was lonely. She could not share with the vulgar villagers her incredible experience of living in many parts of Africa because they were just plain and simple people with no education who had never set foot outside France.

So people try to find others of the same intellectual level , same interest and same depth of knowledge and experience but it is not so easy. The sophisticated people can't tolerate unsophisticated people who might snicker and say that intellectuals are high nose.
Very talented people who are very educated and have traveled all over the world may find themselves isolated if others are the common folks with no talent. In such cases it is far better to live alone than to be with people who do not understand you or do not show respect to your education, experience and talent.

Now we are in the age of Internet and quick connection with anyone anywhere so you may have hundreds of so called friends in your Facebook or other social media but are they really your friends? You may feel let down if you meet with them face to face someday. Some of these internet friends may turn out to be real rascals who are out to victimize people who live alone. Some may try to borrow money or other things from you but never return the money. This world is unfortunately full of crooks so one must choose his company very carefully and trust no one easily. The trust should be earned by proving that one can be trusted. I have been let down by people I have known for a long time and have learned my lesson the hard way.

Those people who feel lonely at times can make their life fruitful and useful if they take up something they love the most. It may be writing or gardening or doing some free community work to help those who need. Others find fulfillment in mentoring a young bright person who needs help. There are many social clubs one can join and lastly there are those religious groups if that is your cup of tea. Each group comes with a price tag so you have to know what you are getting into and if you are willing to pay the price.

So being alone does not mean that you will be lonely. I find living alone with my wonderful wife a joyful experience so you may say that I am lucky. I think everyone should try to create his or her own world where he is comfortable because that is one way to cope with loneliness in the modern world or you can move back to your native village and accept the people the way they are. The choice is yours.
